Democrats lack judge candidate
The Democrats still have found no one to oppose Charles
C. Brown Jr. in the election for Centre County Common
Pleas Jtidge, the Democratic area chairman said Wed
nesday.
.
State College Area Democratic Chairman Dale Baker
said the position of controller also has no Democratic
candidates yet. Baker spoke at a Democratic caucus
meeting.
County Commissioner John Saylor will be seeking re
election. Saylor said Centre County government has been
expanded and improved over the last three years, citing
improvements in housing for the elderly as one of the major
accomplishments of the county government.
Other candidates for commissioner are Don Hillard of
Benner Tonwship and Stan Gryczk of Millheim. Hillard
Soil judgers raising funds for contest
The Soil Judging Team is selling hats
in an effort to raise funds not received
from the Associated Student Activities
Budget Committee.
A spokeswoman for the team, Elissa
Levine, said funding for all the judging
teams in the College of Agriculture was
cut by the office of the vice president for
student affairs. They were also ineligible
to receive ASA funding, even after
petitioning the committee.

The Democratic candidate for prothonotary will be in
cumbent Ruth C. Rudy. The prothonotary keeps Common
Pleas Court records. Rudy said she increased the county's
revenue during her term.
Mike Krehel of Bellefonte is the first Democratic can
didate for coroner in 20 years. Krehel has been a licensed
funeral director for seven years, and has had experience
working with the coroner.
John W. Miles will run for an eighth term as recorder of
deeds. Miles has held the position since 1952.

PSU student chosen for pageant

• Laura Stanonis (11th-general arts
and sciences) has been named a con
testant in the 1979 Miss Pennsylvania
Pageant to be held in Greensburg on
March 2 to 5.
The pageant, which is part of the Miss
U.S.A. competition, will be televised for
the first time on March 5, Stanonis said.
Stanonis was named Miss Sweden Day
of 1978 in New York last August. A native
of Long Island, Stanonis is president of
the Swedish Club, a winner in the in
tramural mixed doubles tennis cham
pionship, and an ice skating instructor.
• Henry S. Albinski University
professor of political science, has been,
named a Fulbright-Hays Senior Scholar.
Albinski, who is now on sabbatical
leave from the University, is at the
Australian National University
researching a book-length study of the
security relationship between the United
States and Australia.
The Fulbright-Hays award was an
nounced by the Board of Foreign'
Scholarships and the U.S. International
program, host Norman Corwin examines.
