Longtime Chicago baseball announcer
Bob Elson has been selected as the 1979
winner of the Ford C. Frick Award by
the Baseball Hall of Fame, it was an
nounced Thursday.
The award, named after the former
baseball commissioner, is presented by
the Hall of Fame each year to members
of the broadcast media who have made
major contributions to the sport.

Gorence scored two goals, including the
game winner at 2:50 of the final period
as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the
Boston Bruins 5-3 last night in a National
Hockey League game.
Gorence picked the puck off the side
boards, skated around the net and
stuffed home the winning shot. The puck
glanced past Boston goaltender Jim
Pettie off the skate of a Bruins' defen
seman.
Earlier, it had been a battle of power
play goals, Boston taking a 2-0 lead after
only 4:42 of the opening period.
Pittsburgh thumps North Stars
PITTSBURGH (AP) George Ferguson's 11th goal of the
season, coming at 7:29 of the final period, proved to be the
winner as the Penguins defeated Minnesota 6-5 in a National
Hocky League Game last night.
The Penguins' victory continues their six-year mastery over
the North Stars on Pittsburgh ice. Minnesota hasn't won in the
Civic Arena since March 4, 1973,105ing 10 and tying two in that
time.
Minnesota dominated the game during the first two periods,
hut couldn't solve the Penguins' attack in the final period,
giving up three unanswered goals in little more than four
minutes.
Ferguson's goal came when 'he took a feed from Jacques
Cars hand 76ers second straight loss
RICHFIELD, Ohio (AP) Campy
Russell tossed in 28 points to spark the
Cleveland Cavaliers to their second
straight National Basketball Association
victory, a 113-100 decision over the
Philadelphia 76ers last night.
The Cavaliers never trailed, moving
out to a 7-2 edge and building that to 29-19
at the end of the first period.

scoring when he guided a Brad Park shot
into the corner of the Flyers' net. The
Flyers were a man short after being
assessed a bench penalty for too many
men on the ice. Then at 4:42, with the
Flyers' Mel Bridgman in the penalty
box, Jean Ratelle shot off the pads of
Wayne Stephenson. The puck rebounded
and Ratelle poked it past the Flyers'
goalie for a 2-0 lead.
The Flyers, however, tied it after
consecutive penalties on Boston. Behn
Wilson tapped one in from about 5 feet at
6:48, and Bridgman beat Pettie with just
Cleveland kept the pressure on the
cold-shooting 76ers, running their lead to
43-25 with 6:38 left in the second period.
Cleveland led 53-38 at the half, with the
76ers scoring just 19 points in each of the
first two periods and no Philadelphia
player scoring in double figures.
Julius Erving led the 76ers with 25
points, 18 of them in the second half.
