„ Money upgrades women's basketball
NEW YORK (AP) The major
powers in men’s collegiate athletics are
beginning to flex their muscles in
women’s basketball.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The
Philadelphia Phillies are maintaining

and broke his right collarbone. He’ll

Baden takes second in two-mile
Trackmen fall short in Cleveland
By STEVEN LAVINSKY
Daily Collegian Sports Writer
The banked-board track at the
Cleveland Knights of Columbus Track
Meet provided plenty of excitement, but
produced no distance winners for the
Penn State track team over the
weekend.
British miler Tony Staynings, running
for the Louisville, Ky. Mason-Dixon
Track Club, fought off a fine effort by the
Lions’ Bruce Baden to take the two-mile
run.
“Before the race I knew a couple of the
guys were kickers,” Baden explained. “I
was following the pack until the pace
started to settle. I’m not a kicker but it
was a matter of my survival. If I had
waited they could have taken me. It (the
kick) got me a place.”
Baden held the number two spot until
the finish line when he was out-leaned by
Villanova’s Dean Childs, the former
NCAA mile champ and 1500-meter,
Canadian record-holder.
Skiers dom
Winning eight of the top 10 medals in
the men's competition, and six in the
women’s, the Ski Team dominated the
National Standard Race competition
held on Sunday at Oregon Hill.
After carrying home the team trophy
from last weekend’s third annual Penn
State Invitational, the team members
returned to the ski area this past Sunday
to match skills with other unattached
skiers at the weekly NASTAR (men) and
Bonnie Bell (women) races.
NASTAR is a nationally recognized
racing program for skiers of all ages and
abilities, which assigns a racer a
national handicap that compares his or
her skill to a leading professional racer
in the United States. The handicap also
allows for comparison with other
recreational skiers across the country.
season
What concerns the Phillies’ most
about Christenson is whether the injury
is serious enough to perhaps end the
career of one of the best young pitchers
in the National League.
Christenson was part of a bicycle
caravan on the West Coast for the
benefit of muscular dystrophy, which is
scheduled to windup in San Diego, Calif.,

“He tried to steal the race from the

Snyder’s 4:08.6 in the mile run “was
not a fast time because it developed into
a tactical race, but Robert ran a great
race,” Groves said.
Lion captain Bill Auston placed fifth in
the 600-yard run won by Philadelphia

“his best race ever on boards,” Groves

Although placing fifth, Lion Mike

he was shut out, and in four, the Phillies
scored either one or two runs.
Unless Christenson’s injury is less
serious than indicated, it would seem
that Phillies' personnel director Paul
Owens is in a position where he has to
make a deal to get a proven pitcher.
Owens said Christenson was enroute to
Philadelphia, and would be examined
Monday night by team physician Phillip
J. Marone.
SUMMER JOBS
The following positions are available
run at Princeton.
At the Bucknell Invitational, the Lions
recorded 12 first-place finishes and two
individual records. Senior Tim
Backenstose placed first in the two-mile
run, setting his personal best at 9:13.1.
The Lions also netted firsts in the
quarter-mile run, the 600 and 1000-yard
run, high jump, triple jump and two-mile
relay. Jim Clelland broke his own record
placing fifth in the three-mile run at
13:56.9. Paul Pollock earned a first by
running the 60-yard high hurdles in eight
seconds. Tom Rapp, Ray Crumbel and
Kelly O’Brien took the top three spots in
the three-mile run. Rapp, who sat out
practice last week because of a strained
hamstring suffered in last weekend's
meet, said he was not even sure his leg
would hold throughout the race.
Lion vaulter Bill Carroll cleared 14
feet for a first in the pole vault. Tim
Bowers placed first in the 35-pound
weight competition with a toss of 44.11.25
in.
Penn State’s silver medalists, Bob
Strand, Dave Hanna, Eric Woelfel and
Craig Sherrett. Tom Pauly, Mike Mc-
Closkey and Dave Orth each won a
bronze medal for their seventh, eighth
and ninth place finishes.
Fleckenstein, who skied while
recovering from a broken right arm,
said the sub-zero weather made racing
on the course difficult.
“The conditions were a little icy, with
some slick spots,” she said. “But it was
challenging; you had to plan what you
were doing before you went down the
course.”
