A classic: two Eastern volleyball
powers so evenly matched that no one
knew who would win until the very last
point.
When the smoke and the crowds
cleared, Rutgers-Newark had defeated
Penn State for the fourth consecutive
time, 16-14,13-15,13-15,15-4 and 15-13.
"At times, the match could have gone
either way,” Lion coach Tom Tait said.
“The only game that was not even close
was the fourth game and towards the
end of that game, we started to come
back at them.”
“Despite losing, we learned a lot
tonight. The team improved since the
beginning of the match in terms of the
playing standpoint and emotionally. If

Penn State’s men’s swim team
combatted injury, illness and a below
average facility when it traveled to
Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.
Not only did the Lions overcome these
obstacles, they easily overcame the
Scarlet Knights, 59-47. ‘
Penn State did as well as head coach
Lou'MacNeill expected, as he said he
was satisfied with the way the meet
turned out.

It wasn’t even close.
The Lady Lions dove into the waters of
the Natatorium on Saturday and
emerged victorious, leaving Slippery

From start to finish the Lady Lions
never let up as they swept first place in
all 15 events and often took second or
third as well. In the process, the medley
relay team set a new team record with a

we did with the Japanese, then we will be
a significantly better team by the end of
the season,” Tait said.
“We had a little problem with getting
too emotionally high. Several key serves
were hit right into the receiver that
helped them effectively complete their
offense. Those serves helped Rutgers get
psyched up.
“Overall, we played good ball, but
there was some weakness in our of
fensive coverage. It is the kind of thing
that will strengthen as the season goes
on and when we compete against the top
teams,” Tait said.
Penn State jumped off to a 4-0 lead
against Rutgers in the first game. But
four serving errors helped Rutgers
make a quick comeback.

we showed good concentration, but we

said. “They have some good performers,
some good distance men and some good
sprinters.”
-The key to Saturday’s meet was the
performance of the Lions’ Andy
Cosgarea. Cosgarea won the 1000-yard
freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle,
setting pool records in both events, and
setting a Penn State record in the 500.
“Andy had a great day,” Mac Neill

“I'm pleased that we were able to
swim some good times, considering that
we’ve been practicing very hard,” coach
Ellen Perry said. “They were tired and
sore but their performances mean that
our training program is working.”

said.
Rutgers tied the score at seven, but the
Lions charged ahead to take a 14-9 lead.
Rutgers, however, took the last seven
points to win.
In the second game Penn State again
jumped off to a 4-0 lead, but Rutgers
came back to tie the game at five and
lead through most of the rest of the'
match. With Penn State ahead 13-11,
Chuck Keggereis and Dave Mull came
through with a crucial point and side out
to help the Lions take the match.
The third match was more of a see

back and forth for the lead eight times.
Key spikes by Mull helped pull the Lions
out of a 13-13 tie to win the match.

Mac Neill credited Cosgarea’s per

"He got mad,” Mac Neill said. “He
was three bodylengths behind, and he
got mad and poured it on,”
Mac Neill also praised the efforts of
Kevin McKee, who tied Penn State’s 200-
yard backstroke record, winning the
event in 2:01.0. A 1 Berardocco set a Penn
State record with his 100-yard

The fourth game was the only
runaway game of the match. After Penn
State struggled to tie the score at two,
Rutgers rattled off 11 points before the
Lions scored again. (
It came down to the final game to
decide the winner.
Penn State was leading 11-4 when
Rutgers’ defense became phenomenal,
shutting off Penn State’s offense. The
Scarlet Knights tied the match at 13.
before they won the last two points over
a stubborn Penn State.
“Rutgers was an excellent team at the
end of the match, while we were only a
good team,” Tait said. "We will meet
them again in the season and we know
the important time is in April with the
volleyball playoffs. We are already
planning on something for the next time
we meet them.”
swimming events and took first and!
second in both diving categories.
Instead of the one-meter and three
meter competitions, the divers com
peted in required and optional diving.
Both were on one-meter boards.
“The water was too shallow,” said Bob 1
Ambrose, winner of the optionals and
second in the requireds, “We could only
use the one meter board.”
“There were big waves and flat
walls,” Mac Neill said. “It’s an old
facility.”
With Princeton, a team that is possibly
the best in the East, coming up next
week, Perry said that she can use the
information she gained about her
swimmers to help them beat the Lady
Tigers.
“This meet gave me some ideas as to
how we can approach Princeton/,
strategically,” Perry said. '
At any rate, the Lady Lions are now 6-1
