Lady runners favored over Pitt
The first Penn State women's indoor
track meet of the season is Saturday
against the University of Pittsburgh. '
The Lady Lions have always opened in
Pittsburgh because as coach Chris
Brooks said, "They're an enjoyable
team to start the season with. We always
have a good time competing against
them."
Assistant coach Carolyn Court said
that the team should win although it had
only three days of practice since break.
"But," said Court, "They (Pitt) do
have a number of very good athletes."
Brooks said that Pitt doesn't have any
real good long distance runners but that
they do have particularly good sprinters.
"Their high jumpers outclass ours any
day," she said.
To provide balance during the com
petition, Brooks isn't sending any long
distance runners except for the fresh
men.
"I want to give them racing practice,"
the coach said.
Brutal Pittsburgh-Houston battle expected
PITTSBURGH (AP) With hard hits and groans,
they've broken some bones, but name-calling has never
hurt the spirit of friendly ferocity between the Pitt
sburgh Steelers and Houston Oilers.
Indeed, the foes in Sunday's American Football
Conference championship have remained chivalrous
through nearly a decade of roughhouse rivalry in the
AFC Central Division.
"There's a kind of an admiration between the two
teams and the two cities," said Oiler Coach "Bum"

Lea Ventura, a quarter-mile runner,
said the purpose of the meet is to work on
speed.
"Everyone will probably move down
an event for the meet," said Penny
Fales, winner of the indoor Eastern
Championship for the half mile. "I run
the half mile so at the meet I'll probably
do the quarter mile."
Asked if she expected to retain the
championship this year, Fales said,
"Yeah, I hope so. But there'll be more
competition."
Spikers 'slip'

The team lost in the finals to Florida
16-14 in both of the last two matches.
In addition to the tournament, the
spikers won three scrimmages in some
international competition to help
prepare for the upcoming Japanese All-
Star match.
"It was a real good trip. We ac
complished everything we had planned
on," Tait said. "The matches were very
interesting with a lot of offensive and
defensive maneuvering.
"We had no problems that can't be
worked out like the last couple of years.
There aren't any holes that we have to
hide."
The spikers will be playing the
volleyball alumni 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at
Rec Hall.

back including former All-Americans

team will make that two hour journey
"home" to Mechanicsburg in order to
face Drexel University Saturday
evening.
Coach Clayton John does not think the
teams' playmaking ability will by ef
fected due to the break.
John said, "If anything, it (the break)
will affect the players' stamina.
"More important is for them not to
take the game too lightly," he said. "We
have to keep our heads and not get ' over
excited in order to have something left
for the second and third periods.

Oiler quarterback Dan Pastorini, knocked from that
1977 game with a badly sprained ankle, took another
pounding when the two teams met again last month in
Houston. •
Pastorini sustained three cracked ribs. Earl Camp
bell cracked one rib. And Houston also lost rookie wide
receiver Mike Renor the season with a knee injury.
