growing,” said Rhea Linkoun, a
member of that state’s “Hellcats.” "We
now have 20 teams in Fairfax County
with an average of 16 women on each
team”’ ,
Linkoun is not the only person who has
noticed the rise in women’s soccer’s
popularity.
“Compared to the first years that we
played (1975), women’s soccer has
really grown,” said Marian Gillan, a
player on the Great Danes from Reston,
Virginia. “Now there are lots of in

programs being started. ’ ’
The players expressed hope that this
tournament might mark the beginning of
a tradition of such tournaments...
“We would like to participate in tour
naments in the spring and winter,” said
Teresa Bushman, a player on the Tidal
Basin Blues who beat the Meteors 6-0 to
win the tournament championship.

' According to Coyle, there Will be lots
of upcoming tournaments.
“Just about every team talked about
having a tournament in the Spring and
summer," said Coyle. “I think this
tournament has initiated a series of
soccer, tournaments for women. Within
time, they’ll grow to a more massive
level.”
There were no varsity teams com
peting in the tournament. All the squads
were made up of diverse individuals who
represented clubs in their areas. .The ISC
was the only competing team affiliated
with a university.
“This club has just been formed. Most
of the team members are married and
the average age is 31,” Hellcats coach
Wally Ambrose said.
Even though they did not participate
in the tournament, there are three other
women’s soccer clubs associated with a
university: Villanova, Franklin and
Marshall and Lehigh. Some universities
have developed varsity squads but Coyle
sees many advantages to being a club.
“Most of the Ivy League schools have
varsity squads, but they are limited to
playing only the fall season, while we
can play from summer-to-summer,”
Coyle said.’ ,•

Lions avoid upset No. 2
Sallitt saves wrestlers
By RICK WEBER
Daily Collegian Sports Writer
It seems as if everyone is out to
knock off the seventh-ranked
wrestling team these days.
Clarion State College, turned on by
a frenzied capacity crowd, upset the
Lions, 24-15, last Thursday. Bloonis
burg State College, sparked'by its
own full house, tried to do the same
ithing Saturday. And it almost pulled
off a second consecutive shocker. •
The Huskies got wins at 126,134 and
177, but Penn State got a match
clinching victory by Sam Sallitt at
190, and hung on to notch a 19-14 win.
Before Sallitt took the mat, the
Lions were clinging to a narrow 16-11
lead over Bloomsburg. With Penn
State expecting a loss at
heavyweight, the outcome lay almost
completely in the hands of Sallitt.
Sallitt did not disappoint. With the
score tied at nine and two minutes
remaining in the bout, Sallitt got a
penalty point, reversal and two
takedowns to win, 17-11, and clinch
Penn State’s ninth win in 10 tries.
“Sallitt has been wrestling good tor
us all year,” Lion coach BilJ-Koll said.
“I don’t think he wrestled as good a
match as he has earlier but he
wrestled good enough to beat the
guy.”
Koil thought Dave Becker’s 18-6

victory over Gibbs Johnson at 158 was
the key to the win.
“That was really the turning point
in the meet,” Koll said. “He so totally
dominated his man that I think it took
a lot out of them psychologically as a
team. Becker really pounded their
man.”
Ashley Swift, who continually
comes up with clutch efforts, gave
Penn State a boost with a 3-3 draw at
167. The Huskies had expected Andy
Capelli (25-5), their top wrestler with
five falls, to manhandle Swift.
“It was very big because they had
planned on winning there,” Koll said.
“They might even have thought they
were going to get a fall there. They
were pretty upset-minded. I think
they honestly thought they could beat
us.”
The Lions have been forced to
scramble at the middle weights in the
last two meets because of losses at 126
by freshman Scott DeAugustino.
Normally, Penn State can count on at
least a 6-0 lead after the first two
bouts.
“It’s simply a matter of total team
balance," Koll said. "A good team
should be able to pick up points
anywhere along the lineup. Usually,
the lower weights have been giving Us
a big lead and now, there’s more
responsibility on the upper weights. It

March of Dimes
The Daily Collegian Monday, January 30,1978
puts more pressure on the team up
above, but that’s what gives you a
measure of what kind of team you
have.
“Bloomsburg has a very well- im
balanced team. In terms of lineups,
they should give us a better match
than Clarion because they line up
tougher for us. But we wrestled so flat
at Clarion that it wasn’t a measure of g
what kind of team we were. We g
wrestled better against Bloomsburg, g:
although I think the boys are still tired $:
from midterms and the last three jg
trips.”
TAKEDOWNS: Penn State is 9-1 g
overall and 2-1 in Eastern Wrestling
League competition. The Lions’ loss
to Clarion was their first league g
ever... Some individual records:
Alike DeAugustino, 18-1; Becker, 17-1- g
1; Bill Vollrath, 18-2-1; Dan Ffautz, g
16-4-1; Scott DeAugustino, 13- g
4. .. Next match is at home against g
Navy on Saturday.
