Colts beat Redskins
on passing of QB Jones
BALTIMORE (AP) Bert Jones
drilled two key third-down passes to
Freddie Scott early in the fourth
quarter, including ti 12-yard touchdown
toss, to give the Baltimore Colts a 10-3
victory over the Washington Redskins in
a National Football League struggle last
night.
Rain that fell throughout the
nationally televised game hampered the
passing of Jones, the American Con
ference leader. But he completed four of
six attempts for 47 yards on the winning
drive.
Completions of 24 yards to Glenn
Doughty and 11 yards to Raymond
Chester gave the Colts a first down at the
Washington 24 as the third period ended.
Then, on a third-and-seven play, Scott
grabbed a pass and made a first down by
inches at the 14. The TD toss, threaded
between two defenders, was grabbed by
an off-balance Scott just before he
tumbled into the end zone.
The victory gave Baltimore a 7-1
record, enabling the first-place Colts to
regain their 1-game lead over the Miami
Dolphins in the AFC East. Washington is
4-4, 1 game behhid St. Louis and four
back of unbeaten Dallas in the National
Conference East.
Before getting hot late in the game,
Rozelle: Any team could win
On any given weekend, Commissioner
Pete Rozelle is fond of saying, any
National Football League team is
capable of beating, or, for that matter,
losing to any other member of the 28-
club lodge.
And if you don't believe the boss,
check out what has been going on in his
playground this season.
The barometer for any league's
success is balance and, except for un
beaten Dallas and winless Tampa Bay,
the NFL has been a picture of parity this
season.
Eight weeks into the season, only five
teams are more than two games over

Jones had completed only 6 of 18 passes.
He finished with completions on 13 of 27
passes for 180 yards. Jones entered the
game with only 1 interception for the
season, but the Redskins picked off 2 of
his attempts. Lydell Mitchell gained 111
yards on 29 carries to keep the Colts
moving most of the game.
Washington's opportunistic veterans
managed to forge a 3-3 first-half tie while
being out-gained 180 yards to 87 and
running only 22 offensive plays to
Baltimore's 44.
Mark Murphy of the Redskins downed
.500 and the standings reflect the kind of
topsy turvy year it has been.
• Three division leaders Cleveland in
the American Conference Central and
Minnesota and Los Angeles in the
National Conference Central and West,
respectively have very ordinary 5-3
records.
Upsets continue to dot each week's
action, leaving favorites stumbling and
underdogs scoring unexpected victories.

a Mike Bragg punt at the Baltimore 2-
yard line midway in the second quarter,
setting up a 40-yard field goal by Mark
Moseley with 1:28 left in the first half. It
came after Baltimore failed to move far
out of its own territory.
That field goal matched one of 26
yards by Toni Linhart of Baltimore with
4:04 to go in the first quarter. It followed
a pass interception by Colts linebacker
Stan White. The ball was initially tipped
by linebacker Ed Simonini, then White
ran it back 13 yards to the Washington
26.
Item San Diego jolts Miami with a
last-second touchdown to give Miami its
second defeat of the season. Then, sky
high from the emotional victory, the
Chargers go into Detroit and are blanked
20-0.
Item Los Angeles embarasses
Minnesota 35-3 on a Monday night, then
loses to lowly New Orleans the following
Sunday. The Saints then lose to
Philadelphia 28-7. ,„
Item Minnesota recovers from 'its
one-sided Monday night loss to Los
Angeles by beating Atlanta, then returns
triumphantly home only to be battered
by St. Louis 27-7.
