As the 1.8 million member denomination ended its 11th general Synod, delegates said they deplored "the use of Scripture to generate hatred and the violation of civil rights of gay and bisexual ,0 persons , They said "the recent referendum in Dade County, Fla., represents a new reactionary movement which may eventually erode the civil liberties of all." A move by anti-gay forces in the church to substitute a motion declaring their sup port for civil rights for gays but saying the church did "not condone homosexuality as an alternative . lifestyle" was defeated. Following the vote, Ms. Helen T. Barnhill, chairman of the denomination's execu- FBI selection panel supported WASHINGTON (UPI) President Carter yesterday threw his support behind the citizens committee that recommended five men as FBI director, and said the panel has not been asked to broaden its search. Saying he was speaking for Carter, Press Secretary Jody Powell strongly defended the committee, which has been criticized , because of revelations about the finalists it recommended. "The President feels the citizens committee has done a good job and has been getting some unfair criticism," Powell said. "The committee did exactly what it was supposed to. This sort of charge in the press basically misrepresents the purpose of this committee." Carter was back at the White House yesterday after a long Fourth of July weekend at Camp David, Md. It is known that the President might select one of the five finalists despite published accounts about them. It also is known, however, he will take into Begin says peace talks are feasible By United Press International Israeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin said yesterday he is ready to meet Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Geneva for peace talks beginning Oct. 10. But the key issue of Palestinian representation remained unresolved. Begin responded to Sadat's quick acceptance of an Israeli offer to reconvene the Geneva Middle East talks, stalled since December, 1973. Sadat said Egypt was "ready to go" to Geneva, too. Israeli officials said Israel is willing to discuss any topic with the Arabs, including the future of the occupied West Bank of Jordan. It was the first time that either side mentioned a specific date for resuming the conference which the United States wants reconvened by the end of this year. However, Israeli officials warned against overoptimism, noting that Arab leaders have not withdrawn their demand for representation of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the Geneva talks. Israel refuses to deal with the PLO. ~. There is nothing like a nice cold bowl of soup. Mom may have forgotten to tell you that while she was busy re minding you of the virtues of hot soup - - but then very few mothers had a French Chef who could make refreshing vichyssoise or really cool cucumber soup or icy gazpacho. Every day we have a soup to help you keep cool as well as some great hot soups. After all, mom did know what she was talking about. G feb / • !row a i ls a al t t i zz 4 . The Los Angeles Times reported that Lucas had expense-paid visits to Las Vegas; that Wood acknowledged he may have been "naive" about what was going on in the Watergate scandal while he was ad ministrative assistant to Deputy Attorney General Richard Kleindienst; that FBI agents working under Welch somehow obtained a document from the private files of the Socialist Workers Party, and that Van de Kamp and Irwin lack broad national experience.
