'Live' Moody Blues emotionless onstage By TOM MARCINKO Collegian Staff Writer "Caught Live Plus Five" by the Moody Blues (London) The release of this live 1969 performance has to be taken as a cheap commercial shot since the Moodies were never any good in concert anyway. (Not when I saw them in Pittsburgh in 1973, and if this is the best performance London can find in its archives . . .) For the most part they play and sing well, though the back ground vocals in "Ride My See-Saw" and "Nights in White Satin" are horribly out of key. Emotion is missing, though. The band simply stands on stage, goes through the paces, and is done with it. Side four includes five "previously unreleased" studio recordings, which means they weren't good enough, or interesting enough, to appear on the albums released in 1968-69. "Little Queen" by Heart (Portrait) "Barracuda" is as good a follow-up to "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man" as anyone could want, but the rest of Heart's second album is a bit thin. The band can't seem to decide whether to be a soft or hard rock band, but it could be both. What it needs is more rock. The first, "Dreamboat Annie," showed a lot of promise. Certain cuts on "Little Queen". show a lot of promise, too. Klaatu" (Capitol) You must have wondered, given the rumors that Klaatu was the Beatles behind a mask. The four Canadians' brand of British-style rock is as overproduced and pretentious as Queen at its worst. That's pretty pretentious. Occasionally Klaatu man ages to be catchy ("Sub-Rosa Sub way") but not catchy enough to give rise to those rumors. SUMMER SALE STARTS TODAY • • • • • • • • • • • • • Don't miss it. Michael Rennie is spinning in his grave. "Peter Gabriel" (Atco) He took progressive rock (or art rock, or space rock, or whatever) about as far as it could go when he was with Genesis, but I like what he's doing now much better. The idyllic "Solsbury Hill" is as ef fective as Peter Townshend's softer music, and Gabriel's hard rock ("Down the Dolce Vita," "Modern Love") makes leaving Genesis seem like a great idea. Besides, anyone who can rhyme "Mona Lisa" with "freezer" and get away with it deserves some kind of award. record review "Now" by the Tubes (A & M) "Smoking" is perhaps the best parody of David Bowie since "Diamond Dogs" (yes, I know), but the rest, despite great titles likc "Cathy's Clone," are un distinguished pop-rock tunes. The Tubes, judging by what I've heard about their stage act and seen from their album covers, want you to think they're crazy. But they're as sane as you are, and when was the last time you cut a funny record? "The• Beatles" (Capitol) This two record set of rock, ballads, vaudeville, protest music, and a great jab at Led Zeppelin called "Helter Skelter" is from a band showing a lot of promise. Trouble is, the cover is all white. Are they trying to hide something? You know what I think? I think they're Klaatu. No really, look at the clues . . . ' . : 7 ' . : : . -,/,;,':.• '-:, !
