Borg downed Gerulaitis 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 8-6 in a back-and-forth contest that wasn't decided until Borg broke the New Yorker's serve in the 14th game of .the final set on the All-England Club's center court. Earlier in the day, Connors, the 1974 champion from Belleville, 111., ended the dreams of 18-year-old John McEnroe, the youngest semifinalist in Wimbledon's 100 years, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The loss was the end of a popular rise to fame by the lean left-hander from Douglaston, N.Y., who beat the likes of Sandy Mayer and Australia's Phil Dent before running into the brick wall that is Connors McEnroe had come here intent on the juniors competition but found himself in the midst of the battle for tennis' most prestigious prize. The triumph was the Yankees' sixth in the last eight games and left them just one half game behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. They were five games out a week ago. Phrnies pummel PHILADELPHIA (AP) Mike Schmidt tied a 30-year-old National League record for most homers hit in June when he socked his 14th of the month and 21st of the season last night as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1. Schmidt tied the record set by Ralph Kiner for the Pirates in 1947, but fell one shy of the major league mark of 15 held by Babe Ruth in 1930, Bob Johnson in 1934, and Roger Maris in 1961.
