Court crowds thin in summer
Time is now for racquet fans
By MIKE VANDINE
Collegian Sports Writer
Just walk around campus. It's hard
to ignore that tennis is becoming one
of the most popular sports around.
Tennis racquets can be seen
sticking out of• knapsacks and on the
backs of 10-speed bicycles every
where.
The majority of people questioned
around University courts said that
the two main reasons they play tennis
are for the fun and exercise. But
there are other reasons. As one
player put it, "It's a great way to
catch some rays."
The ability of players on campus
ranges from the beginner to the near
professional. Many players are just
out for a good time, racquets .and
apparel don't matter much. The sun,
the running, and the mistakes make
the game enjoyable.

There are also a number of no
nonsense players. These people play
regularly and take a great deal of
pride in their game, trying to improve
every time out. Often accompanying
this pride are double knit shorts and
$3O dollar tennis shoes. But don't be
fooled, the wardrobe does not make
the player. For example, notice the
person with the $7O outfit and the ten
cent backhand.
As for facilities, the University has
a total of 68 tennis courts, 16 of which
are privately run. All of the 52 public
courts are in good condition as a
result of a rubberized surface that
was installed two years ago.
The classiest courts are those run
by the Penn State Tennis Club. Six of
the 16 semi-private courts have a clay
surface, which provides a feeling of
tournament action. The club also

operates the only four indoor courts
on campus which enable year-round
playing.
With the increased interest in
tennis comes the increased demand
for courts. Getting a court this
summer is seldom difficult, but fall
will bring thousands of additional
players who will no doubt cause a
problem.
One answer might be lights. The
installation of lights around the
courts would increase the amount of
playing hours enormously. At
present there are no lights on any
campus courts and no immediate
plans for them to be installed.
The popularity of tennis has also
given rise to a new tennis technology.
For example, the once standard wood
racquet is being challenged on the

For those who have the proper
equipment but lack the proper form,
lessons may be the ansvlrer. For the
beginner and intermediate-players a
University tennis class is a good way
to improve their game. Betty Arink
who has been teaching for 7 years,
guarantees th.t. anyone with a 'little
coordination will learn the basic
strokes that a're necessary for a good
game.
Regardless of your ability, tennis is
a great game. But you better get out
and enjoy it now, while there's still a
court to play on.
