    Faces Connors tomorrow
Another McEnroe upset
- WIMBLEDON, England (AP) John
McEnroe, •18 years and 4 months old, upset
Phil Dent of Australia yesterday and became
the youngest men's semifinalist in 100 years
of Wimbledon. .
The fair-haired left-hander from
Douglaston, N.Y., who plays as an amateur
among big-money professionals, won 6-4, 8-9,
4-6, 6-3, 6-4. .
"I wasn't sure if I would get into the
tournament at all," McEnroe said. "And
when I did get in, I didn't expect to win more
than a few games in each set."
The young hero of the centenary tour
nament now faces the No. 1 seed, Jimmy
Connors of Belleville, 111., who defeated
Byron Bertram of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-
2.
The other semifinals set for Thursday will
be between Vitas Gerulaitis of Howard
Beach, N.Y., and defending champion Bjorn
Borg of Sweden.
Gerulaitis overran Billy Martin of Palos
Verdes, Calif., 6-2, 8-9, 6-2, 6-2 while Borg
played some of his finest tennis to win 6 ; 0, 8-6,
6-3 over Ilie Nastase of Romania, the man he
beat in last year's final
McEnroe, an excitable youngster with a
white headband around his long, blond hair,
had many moments of , frustration before
overcoming the 13th-seeded Dent. He threw
his racquet, shouted at a linesman and fell
full length on the grass more than once,
holding his head in his hands.
But he brought his emotions under control
and came from behind to win the last two sets
just when it looked as if Dent, nine years
his senior, was taking control.

He said he does not take prize money
because he has been planning to go' to
Stamford University.
"Connors? No, I've never played him. In
fact, I don't think I've ever even met him.
•
But I would know him if I saw him." .
Connors had to work hard for his victory
over Bertram, a broad-shouldered man,with
powerful ground strokes.
Speed and power carried Connors to vic
tory. He broke Bertram's service to win the
third set 6-4 with a forehand that flashed past
the South African as he stood on his baseline.
The ball travelled so fast that Bertram made
no attempt at a return.
Borg sped about the center court and
angled his shots with such subtlety that
Nastase was often immobilized.
The Romanian created the usual diver
sions. He held up play by arguing over line
calls and later complained that a bird's
feather had floated down in front of him.
The umpire, Jeremy Shales, picked up a
telephone and told the tournament referee:
"I am reporting Nastase for time-wasting."
He forgot to switch off his microphone, so
the crowd of 15,000 heard it over the public
address system.

Cubs win
1 1 / 2 games of Boston in the American League
East when the Red Sox lost to Detroit.
MONTREAL (AP) Pinch-hitters Gene
Clines and Greg Gross drove in runs with
sacrifice flies in the 10th inning to give the
Chicago Cubs a 4-2 victory over Montreal
The Cubs loaded .the bases against loser
Will McEnaney, 2-2, on singles by Steve
Ontiveros and Mick Kelleher and a fielder's
choice by Steve Swisher, who was safe at
first when McEnaney fielded his bunt but
was late trying to force Ontiveros at second.
He claimed he was entitled
to a full-year's pay because he
suffered a back injury in
spring training. Pirate Vice
President Harding Peterson
contended that the back in
jury was an old ailment.
Robertson filed a grievance
with the Major League
Players Association, claiming
he was due full pay, reported
at $50,000.
The settlement was reached
before the question went
before an arbitration panel,
Robertson recently un
