Cauthen back in the saddle
NEW YORK (AP) Steve Cauthen,
cheered from the paddock to the post,
returned to the races yesterday after a
month's layoff because of injuries and won
with his first mount a 4-year-old claimer
named Little Miracle.
The 17-year-old riding sensation sent Little
Miracle between horses an eighth of a mile
from the finish and, with the crowd rooting
him on, finished 1 1 / 4 lengths ahead of Pilot's
Son. .

Yanks star in Wimbledon upset
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) Billy Martin and
Tim Gullikson, rising stars of American tennis,
were heroes on another day of upsets in the Wim
bledon Tennis Championships yesterday.
Martin, 20, of Palos Verdes, Calif., demolished the
No. 3 seed, Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 6-2, 6-4, 6-
2.
Gullikson, the right-hander of ,the 25-year-old
Onalaska, Wis., twins, ousted Raul Ramierz of
Mexico, the No. 7 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 8-9, 6-4 in a nerve
tingling struggle lasting almost four hours.
Martin moved into the fourth round, Gullikson, a
round behind, into the third. With the tournament
less than half over, seven of the 16 seeds have been
eliminated a reminder of the depth of talent
throughout the men's game.
Bob Lutz of San Clemente, Calif., seeded No. 15,
also was knocked out' of the tournament. Kim
Warwick of Australia edged him 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 8-6
in another see-saw marathon
Third base coach new pilot
Stanky strands Rangers
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Eddie Stanky
abruptly quit as manager of the Texas
Rangers yesterday after only one game to
return to his former job as a college coach.
Third base coach Connie Ryan was named
interim manager by 'Eddie Robinson,
executive vice president of the Rangers.
Although there was no official an
nouncement, it was expected that Ryan will
take over for the remainder of the season.
Robinson, said no decision would be made
on another manager until he discussed the
matter with team owner Brad Corbett.
Frank Lucchesi was fired as Rangers'
manager only 24 hours earlier. Stanky, 59,
made his comeback as a major league
manager as Texas overcame a 4-0 deficit to
defeat the Twins 10-8 Wednesday night.
A startled Robinson received a telephone
call about 8:15 a.m. yesterday from Stanky,
who was at the airport heading for home.
"You've got to be kidding," Robinson said
he told Stanky.
Robinson said Stanky responded that he
had thought it over all night, decided that he
couldn't leave his family and aged father.
`.'He had deep pangs of remorse," said
Robinson.
Robinson said Stanky told him, "You've

wonderful contract and I know what I'm
turning down."
Robinson said he urged Stanky to stay at
the airport until he could get there so they
could discuss the matter , face-to-face.
Robinson said Stanky replied, "No, I've
made my decision. There will be no second
thoughts."
At Mobile, the school's athletic director,
Mel Lucas, said Stanky was "homesick" and
found out quickly that he didn't want to
return to the major leagues.
"I don't think anyone can understand how
strong his family ties are," Minnesota
Manager Gene Mauch said of Stanky.
Bert Hawkins, the Rangers' traveling
secretary, said he spent some time after
Wednesday night's game and said Stanky
was "smiling and very happy" when he went
to his hotel room.
Ryan, who last managed in 1968 in the
minor leagues,. figured in earlier speculation
that had him replacing Lucchesi. But
Robinson said flatly at that time that Ryan
would never replace Lucchesi as the
Rangers' manager.
"Now we have a completely different
situation," said Robinson. "I see no reason
why Connie couldn't run the ball club until
such a time as we needed somebody else."
