Pirate G.M. retires
PITTSBURGH (AP) Joe L. Brown
announced his resignation yesterday as
general manager of baseball’s Pittsburgh
Pirates in words echoing those of King
Edward VIII when he left the English throne.
“I have a woman that I love,” Brown said
of his wife, Virginia, with whom he shared
their 36th wedding anniversary last Friday.
“I have not devoted as much time to her as
I care to as I’m going to,” he added, his
voice choked with emotion.
Edward VIII abdicated four decades ago
amidst discord over his marriage to an
American divorcee. There was no such
outside pressure on Brown, secure in his post
after 21 seasons and two World Series
championships as Pirate general manager.
“I have worked under the most ideal
condition but I think it’s a matter of
priorities,” said the 58-year-old son of the
late movie and stage comedian Joe E. Brown:
No successor was named, and there was no
immediate word on whether Manager Danny
Murtaugh might join his close friend and
boss in retirement.
: -t*s/ i til
“I don’t think what I do will have any effect
on Danny’s decision,” said Brown, whose
team won National League East titles five.of
the past six seasons.
He also said his move wasn’t influenced by
this year’s also-ran finish by the Pirates, who
won the National League East title five of the
past six seasons.
“I Ihink we’re a championship team
anyhow,” he said. “I think championships lie.
in ihe heart.”
Brown was joined at the news conference
by Pirate board chairman John Galbraith
and his son, club president Daniel Galbraith.
The Galbraiths said Brown would stay with
the club as a scout, but he’ll move with his
wife to California.
“I won’t give you my address because if I
do Murtaugh will get it and move in with
me.” Brown said, breaking into a smile that
brought a more relaxed tone to the news

conference,
Born in New York City, Brown later at
tended UCLA, where he studied journalism.
“I was going to be a sportswriter until I met
several,” he quipped.
He began his baseball' career in 1939 as
assistant business manager with the Lub
bock, Tex., team in the Texas-New Mexico
League.
In 1940, he came to Pittsburgh as general
manager of the Pittsburgh Hornets hockey
club. One of the stick boys on that team was
Joe O’Toole, now the Pirates’ assistant
general manager.
He joined the Pittsburgh organization in
1950 as general manager of their Waco, Tex.,
club, and in 1955 he succeeded the late
Branch Rickey as Pirate general manager.
Prior to his arrival, the Pirates finished
last in the National League in four of five
seasons.
"I'm' not runnin’ away from difficult
times,” Brown said. “I came here in difficult
times.”
Looking back on his trades, Brown said his
best was the 1959 swap that brought Don
Hoak, Smokey Burgess and Harvey Haddix
here from Cincinnati for Frank Thomas, Jim
Pendleton, Whammy Douglas and Johnny
Powers.
That deal proved pivotal in Pittsburgh’s
1960 drive to the World Series title.
"There are some other ones I’m trying to
forget,” Brown said.
Among them were deals that sent pitcher
Bob Purkey to Cincinnati and shortstop Dick
Groat to St. Louis. “My two worst,” Brown
noted.
Nonetheless, Brown made more good deals
that bad ones, and he molded the Pirates into
one of baseball’s most successful teams in
this decade.
“I’ll hate to see him' go,” 'said Pirate
outfielder A 1 Oliver, who attended the news
conference in his capacity as a local sports
caster.
Just last winter, Oliver admitted he was
openly miffed that Brown had considered
trading him.
Oliver’s future and that of other Pirates
remains uncertain for next season.
It’s possible Brown’s duties could be
shared by both O’Toole, assistant general
manager and his current top business
assistant, and Harding Peterson, director of
the Pirates’ scouting and minor league
operations.

ATLANTA (AP) San

Montefusco came within one
pitch of a perfect game last
night, hurling a 9-0 no-hitter
against the Atlanta Braves.
The youngster, known as
“The Count” for his ex

appearance on the mound,
allowed only one batter to
reach base a walk on a 3-1
pitch to Jerry Royster leading
off the fourth inning.
Montefusco, last year’s
Rookie of the Year in the
National League, was in
command all ihe way. San
Francisco fielders only had
routine plays behind the

Montefusco struck out four
batters and forced the Braves
to hit the ball into the ground
for the most part. Shortsop
Johnnie LeMaster alone had
eight chances.
