September 29, t97fi Miners to delay election 6 months CINCINNATI (AP)—Uni ted Mine Workers rejected the counsel of their president Ar nold Miller and voted yester day to push the date for their presidential election back six months. Miller relinquished control of the convention and went to the floor as a delegate to urge that the 1,800-delegate con vention send back a resolution which called for the election to be switched to June 1977. Miller, in the midst of a power struggle within the union, urged that the election be moved up even further to February. After Miller spoke, the con vention’s emotions were fur ther aroused over the president’s decision to turn the gavel over to secretary treasurer Harry Patrick. Many delegates angrily demanded that cantrol be given to Mike Trbovich, the union vice president. Trbovich declined to assume control. Hoyt, Stephens and Beaver Halls voted to prohibit canvassing. In a revote, Nittany buildings 23, 24 and 33 prohibited canvassing, and Simmons, Ritner and Mifflin Halls voted to allow canvassing. Schorr, who became in volved in a confrontation with the House Ethics Committee over the right of a newsman to protect his sources, submitted his resignation in a letter to CBS News President Richard Salant. Salant accepted the resignation with “sadness.” The House committee last '// Pugh St. week declined to file contempt charges against Schorr despite his refusal to disclose where he got a copy of the so called Pike report he gave to the Village Voice, a New York weekly newspaper. But bitterness remained over charges by some CBS colleagues that Schorr initially tried to pin the leak of the report on CBS colleague Lesley Stahl. Schorr denied it. Schorr was suspended by CBS seven months ago, when his hand in the leak was discovered.
