Wayne, over the years, has
learned how to handle the
quieter parts of his films, as
well as the action sequences.
In "The Shootist," he gives a
better, more complex per
formance than he did as
Rooster Cogburn in "True
Grit", which won him an
Oscar.
Lauren Bacall, playing the
widow, does well, although
she seems a bit sophisticated
for such rustic surroundings.
James Stewart does nicely
with his small part..
Director Don Siegel has
gotten as much out of this
movie as there was to be had.
It's not a masterpiece, but it's
more than adequate. Siegel,
who is , a skilled action
director, shows a deft touch in
some of the softer more
reflective scenes. .He is
helped nicely by. Elmer
Bernstein's complementary,
unobtrusive score.
"The Shootist" is just about Museum post Stephen Porter's "Post 7" is currently being
