difficult thing,” Acheson said.
“My own.suspicion of it is
that people who are really
conducting spy work for
foreign governments do not

CHICAGO (UPI) Caution: herbal
cigarettes, teas and capsules may cause un
pleasant mental and physical reactions,
according to a report in this week’s Journal
of the Medical Association.
Dr. Ronald Siegal of the UCLA school of
medicine said the herbal products readily
available in health, food stores and by mail
order from suppliers and importers—contain
substantial amounts of psychoactive sub
stances.
He said their use may result in a number of
intoxications requiring medical attention.
Siegal said 192 distinct herbs are commer
cially available as smoking substances,
mostly in cigarettes.'Often the cigarettes
contain nonpsychoactive ingredients like
yerba, santa, rosemary, thyme, mulein and
spearmint.
But nearly half of them do contain plants
with known mind-altering effects, he said.

hallucinations and highly unpleasant physi
cal and emotional reactions from smoking
“Mint Bidis,” hand-rolled cigarettes import
ed from India. The cigarettes, made from
Indian herbs, were found to contain hiy*
amounts of mind-altering substances;
Siegal said 396 herbs and spices are com
mercially available for use as herbal teas
43 of which contain psychoactive substances,
but generally in such small amounts that they,
have little or no behavioral effects.
However, he said, an individual occasion
ally will have problems. One woman, after
drinking a tea consisting of two ground nut
megs in a glass of warm water, hallucinated
that monsters were trying to engulf her.
Other herbal products are available as cap
sules, some with excessively high doses of
caffeine and other substances, he said. ■;/ '
