MONTREAL (AP) A fired-up United States
team, led by All-American Adrian Dantley,
reclaimed the Olympic basketball gold medal for
Uncle Sam last night with a 95-74 victory over
Yugoslavia.
The triumph was a Bicentennial present from the
youngest basketball team in Olympic history and
erased the bitter memories of Munich, when
America surrendered the gold for the only time in
history.
That happened in a controversial one-point game
against the Soviet Union. But there was no con
troversy about the outcome this time.
Dantley saw to that with a sensational display of
'Shooting that produced 18 first-half points and 30 in
the game. He finished with 116 points as high scorer
for the United States in the six games it took
America to claim the gold.
Twelve of Dantley’s points came in the first sue
minutes of play as Uncle Sam raced to a 20-8 lead at
the start.
With guards Phil Ford and Quinn Buckner
repeatedly stripping Yugoslavia of the ball, the
Americans charged into command.
Ford had seven assists and three steals in the first
half alone as the sniping American defense
dominated the taller Yugoslavians.
The Yanks maintained'a comfortable margin
throughout the second half, scoring key baskets
whenever Yugoslavia started to move on them.
Phil Hubbard had 10 points in one span, coming
off the bench to keep Uncle Sam in control.
As the clock wound down, the capacity crowd of
more than 16,000 fans in the Montreal Forum
chanted “USA, all the way!” Ihe slogan that has
accompanied this team throughout this tour
nament. . -
It was an emotional victory for the Americans,
who enjoyed every moment of the medal presen
tation ceremony presided over by Lord -Killanin,
president of the International Olympic Committee,
and Dr. William Jones, secretary general of the
International Basketball Federation.
It was Jones, who was involved in the middle of
Munich controversy, permitting the Soviets
/J® 1 \ < three chances at a final basket to finally defeat the'
*,‘ ; 'V" ■// Americans 51-50.
.W. |sf§V' V That defeat is the only one in Olympic basketball
l-'V • S history for the United States, which clinched its
' " ’ 1 eighth Olympic basketball gold medal. Since the
■ ‘ , iport was introduced to the Games in 1936, America
/-I aas a record of 70 victories and one loss.
- .. - The United States had pointed toward a rematch
At-LMMptiota w jtj l th e Soviets in these Games. But Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia's Kresimir spoiled that chance with a stunning 89-84 upset over
win last night the Russians in Monday’s semi-finals. The

Americans gained the final with a. 95-77 triumph
over Canada.
Last night’s game was one of the roughest of the
entire tournament.
Dantley was forced to the dressing room early in
the second half when he suffered a cut over his right
eye when Drazen Dalipagic landed on top of him
after going up for a shot. Ironically, Dantley was
charged with a foul on the play.

While he was being treated, Yugoslavia made a
10-2 run at.the Americans, cutting the U.S. lead to 12 -
points. But Hubbard, Scott May, who finished with
14 points,' and Ford restored the American margin
with a flurry of points that built the lead to 81-64.
Many American rooters who could not squeeze.
into the Forum for the basketball game were on
hand at the boxing arena to root for the young U.S.&
team, perhaps the country’s finest in more than two
decades.
Four American boxers, including the polished
“Sugar” Ray Leonard, assured themselves of at
least bronze medals by winning their bouts Tuesday
night. The American team, which has eight boxers
in all still alivein the Olympic tournament, may be
the best the U.S. has fielded in more than two
decades.
Klaus Dibiasi of Italy won the gold medal in
Olympic platform diving with 600.51 points
yesterday night. Dibiasi also won golds in 1972 at
Munich and 1968 at Mexico City: a' l
Greg Louganis, 16, of El Cajon, Calif., won the
silver medal with 576.99. Vladimir Aleynik of the
Soviet Union was third with 548.61.
• In addition to Louganis, the other American
medals on a relatively light schedule were acquired
in yachting.
The‘ United States’ three man soling entry, t
Texans John Kolius of LaPorte and Walter Glasgow •
and Richard Hoepfner of Houston claimed the silver
. medal' after winning the last of the seven race
series. East Germany finished in a tie in points with
the Americans but were placed third because they
did not have a victory. Denmark won the gold in
that class.
Skipper Dennis Conner of San Diego and*
crewman Conn Findlay of Belmont, Calif, won the
bronze in,the Tempest,class,following Sweden and
Russia in the over-allstandings.
Olympic track and field- competitors return to
action today in 15 events, five of them finals, as
ABC-TV’s coverage of the Summer Games con- j,
tinues.
After resting yesterday, the track and field
athletes will bid for gold medals in the men’s 100-
meter high hurdles, hammer throw and 3,000-
meter steeplechase and women’s high jump and 200
meter dash.
The network will televise 3% hours from the
Games Wednesday, from 7:30 to 11 p.m., EDT, plus Jr
