MONTREAL (AP) Nadia Comaneci, Romania’s “Little
Miss Perfection” turned in two more perfect performances
for two more'gymnastic gold medals yesterday and East
German swimmer Komelia Ender won her third and fourth
gold medals within 25 minutes in an action filled evening at the
Summer Olympics. ,
Russia’s Nellie Kim also posted a 10-point performance and
won two gold medals in the final women’s gymnastics com
petition.
Olga Korbut, the darling of the 1972 Munich Games, won
only one individual medal a silver in the balance beam. But
she got the warmest ovation of the night from the overflow
crowd of more than 16,000 at The Forum.
Miss Comaneci’s performance capped a week in which she
emerged as an athletic and television superstar. She won
three gold medals, took a silver medal in the team event anda
bronze. She also won the attention and admiration of the world
as Olga had done before.
Nadials routine on the uneven-bars, which brought her
fourth perfect mark, was the highlight of the evening. As she
whipped her slim body from one wooden bar to the next like a
rubber band, anticipation of the crowd grew as she moved
toward her dramatic back somersault dismount known as the
“Salto Comaneci.”
When she soared backward off the high bar into the
dismount, flashbulbs popped like firecrackers frofn the stands
of the arena. The landing was flawless and Miss Comaneci had
her gold with a 20.0 total score.
The final result for individual events was arrived at by
averaging her score in the event in the compusory and the
optional and adding yesterday’s total.
Teodora Ungureanu, Nadia’s 15-year-old teammate, took
the silver with a 9.9 routine and a 19.8 total. Marta Egervari of
Hungary was third with 19.775.
Miss Comaneci’s routine on the beam combined, her
technical expertise with her usual showmanship. She
played to the crowd, her somersaults and flips were perfect
and her twisting reverse dismount was on the money.
It was another 10, the third she has had on the hazardous
balance beam.
Miss Comaneci’s winning total in the event was 19.95 points.
Miss Korbut, an Olympic has been at2l, received 19.725 points
and Miss Ungureanu was third with 19.7.

Chimkent, has had two perfect marks this week. Her second
one was last night.
Miss Kim’s point total was 19.850. Russia’s Ludmila
■ Tourischeva took the silver medal with 1.825 and Miss
Comaneci, whose score of 9.95 received scattered boos from
the crowd looking for yet another 10, won the bronze with
19.75.
Miss Comaneci, who has devoted half her 14 ydars to
becoming the world’s foremost women’s gymnast, received
perfect 10-point ratings from the judges on the uneven bars
and the balance beam. That boosted her total of perfect scores
to seven for the week.
Before Nadia, no gymnast ever had been awarded a perfect
score in the Olympics.
Brian Goodell of Mission Viejo, Calif., won the men’s 400-
meter freestyle swimming gold medal in world-record time
and the American men’s team won its ninth gold out of nine
events by taking the 400 medley relay in another world record
clocking.
Thus the big stories of these Olympics-continued to be the 14-
year-old Romanian, the American men swimmers and the
" East Gerihan women swimmers. “Great Britain won the
modern pentathlon team gold medal and Poland’s Janucz
Pyciak-Peciak took the individual pentathlon gold. Russia
became the first country in 24 years to sweep all three medals
in Olympic sabre fencing. Gregor Braun of West Germany
won the individual 4,000-meter pursuit cycling crown.
In more of the off-the-field problems that have beset these
Games, the Russian team faced accusations of a fix attempt in
diving yesterday and was briefly threatened with disciplinary

Johnstone’s two-run double keyed a
three-run first inning and the
Philadelphia Phillies went on to beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 last night and
boost their lead in the National League
East to 11 games.
Philadelphia left-hander Tom
Underwood checked the Pirates on
seven hits before leaving in the ninth
inning in favor of Ron Reed. Bruce
Kison, 7-6, took the loss.
'He gave up only three hits after the
four-hit first inning and left for a pinch
hitter in the eighth.
Larry Bowa dropped a broken-bat

action after forfeiting a water polo game and threatening to

Tom Gompf, the U.S. diving team manager, told The
Associated Press that Soviet officials had approached him in
an attempt to fix the springboard diving event by trading
votes of judges. Gompf denied later that the Russians had
suggested a fix, but The AP stuck by its original report and
said it had on Gompf s request, withheld the name of the
Soviet official involved. - •
In the water polo flap, the Russians forfeited a game to
Cuba. Dr. Harold Henning, president of the swimming
federation said the Soviets were withdrawing apparently
because they decided they could not finish in the top six. •
The federation met with Soviet officials, the Russians
promised to play the rest of their scheduled games, and the
federation dropped threatened disciplinary action against
them.
Sue Rojcewicz of Southern Connecticut State triggered a 14-
point burst in the second half that carried the United States to
an 89-75 women’s Olympic basketball victory over Canada.
It gave the Americans a 2-1 record in the six-team round
robin tournament and enhanced their chances of winning a
medal. Canada is 0-3. •
Track and field events, including a final in the women’s long
jump, begin today as ABC-TV’s, coverage of the Summer
Olympic Games continues.
The network will present 1% hours of coverage, from 8 to
9:30 p.m. EDT, and a 15-minute telecast during halftime from
the College All-Star football game. Exact Olympic events to
be televised won’t be known until shortly before air time
because much of the network’s programming is live.
Top events on schedule include the women’s long jump
finals, where American record-holder Kathy MacMillan has a
chance for a medal; heats in the 100-meter dash, where Valery
Borzov of the Soviet Union is attempting to become the first
man to win consecutive Olympic titles in this premier race,
and the 800-meter run, where Rick Wohlhuter of the United
States is one of the favorites. '
• The second day of dressage precision riding will be held at
the Bromont equestrian site, with Princess Ann of Great
Britain drawing much of the attention. Elsewhere, the
Russians and Japanese will continue their spectacular work in
men’s gymnastics and the U.S. boxers and basketball squad
are expected to be in action. \
