Brawling Flyers criticized
PHILADELPHIA (AP) As the Philadelphia Flyers
staged one of their bench-clearing brawls and; as usual, their
National Hockey League opponents cried “foul.”
"Fred Shero sent them out. Two players and the trainer said
they heard him Shero send his jteam out to the fight,” Pitts
burgh Penguin Coach Marc Boileau said of the Flyers’
coach after Pittsburgh lost at least one fight and the game on
Sunday. •
Neither the fights nor Boileau’d remarks seemed out of line
for a team like the Flyers, who didn’t earn their “Broad Street
Bullies” nickname by keeping their gloves on ail the time.
In winning their second Stanley Cup last year, the Flyers
and their top policeman Dave Schultz both set NHL penalty
records. !
As a team the Flyers spent 1,969 minutes in the penalty box,
and a mind-boggling 472 of them belonged to Schultz aptlv
nicknamed “The Hammer.” r
And yet Shero was taken aback by the suggestion he
deliberately sent his troops into battle. “If he Boileau wants to
take a lie detector test, he’ll take one and I’ll take one. All I did
was grab Bobby Clarke and hold him back.”
Not unexpectedly, it was Jack Mcllhargey who the Flyers
describe as a “team policeman since junior hockey days” and
who set a minor league penalty record who led the Flyers
