Host Panthers nip Lion harriers
By RICK WEBER
Collegian Sports Writer
The Penn State cross
country team traveled to
Pittsburgh on Friday and the
Panthers were prepared,
edging out a 27-29 victory over
the Lion harriers.
It was Penn State’s first
dual meet loss of the season,
which the Lions finished with
a 7-1 record. Pitt remained
undefeated for dual meet
competition.
The race also marked the
first dual meet loss of the
season for Paul Stemmer, the
Lions’ top runner. He placed
third behind Pitt’s Nick
Martin and teammate George
Malley. Martin finished in a

and Stemmer in 30:42.
“Pitt was really psyched up
for us and they ran better
against us than they have all
season,” said Lion coach
Harry Groves. “They’re
always excited about beating
any Penn State team. They
really got up for the race and
they went about it like you’re
supposed to in order to win.”
Pitt’s Melvin Boyd took
fourth and Lion Ron Secord
finished fifth. Then Pitt’s
Dave McDonald and Terry
Wile took the crucial sixth
and seventh spots to give Pitt
the victory.
“They ran very hard,” said
