The I)ail> Collegian Monda\, November 10,1975 Booters top Owls in OT By JACK PATON Collegian Sports Writer When Friday night’s Penn State-Temple soccer game at Jeffrey Field went into overtime with the teams tied 1-1, there was little doubt that the Lions would have to come out for the extra periods with nothing but “win” on their minds. A tie beats a loss, of course, but neither would result in a NCAA bid. This may explain why the booters (8-3-1) played possible their most impressive soccer of the season in the overtime to beat the Owls. 4-2 Matt Bahr and John Marsden netted goals and Temple did not get off a single shot against Lion goalie Tim Dantzig. 'We dominated the overtime," said coach Walter Bahr, whether from second wind or desire, I don’t know. Temple came back strong in the second half, but seemed to have a letdown in the overtime." 'Hie biggest blow against the Owls came at 8:14 of OT, when fullback Arnold Menge tripped Marsden inside the 18- \ardhne. Matt Bahr was chosen to take the penalty kick and beat Dave Bragg with a shot that was a bit different for him. "I've been practicing that type of shot by shooting line drives." said Bahr. "This time, though, 1 decided to let up on in\ shot " Bragg guessed one way, and the sophomore mid lielder grounded the shot behind the goalie for his first goal of l lie \ear. Tiie win was assured when Marsden took Bill Klauberg’s pass, broke away from hobbling Owl back John Whitehead, came in alone on Bragg and scored his fifth goal with 44 -econds remaining. The Lions now play a waiting game to see if one of four bids o be extended tomorrow night goes to them. "1 don't know where we stand for the tournament,” said coach Bahr “Temple seemed assured of a bid, but now that’s FOR SALE PM CONTRACT for sale Call m or Dan 865 2763 South ■ ' hfdvor __ f.\ING MACHINES tor sale - tu.' r Toucn and Sew Ken Stretch Stitch Call Mary ■L E '.thlbdnn E Gate lease it • 25 'no November paid ,I'irfj Wtr Spq Mature Mor ’•t benefits Peter 234 8934 unk BEDS built to university ‘•iml ftc at ions. 1’ . yr old :irp<.t must sell, best offer 5 BDRM TRAILER for sai>. The Penn State coach certainly got a performance worthy of a tournament team on Friday, and he spread praise on four players in particular. “Dantzig bailed us out of some situations when the defense got mixed up, and had a great night,” he noted. “Rich Reice and Marsden played well, and Kevin Costello came off the bench to give us a solid game.” Reice opened the night’s scoring for the Lions four minutes after Jack Dietz got the game’s first goal at 8:43 of the first half. Reice scored from the right wing after Matt Bahr had hit him with a cross-field pass; Dietz had headed a shot past Dantzig after the goaler had come out of the net to stop another shot. ; At 9:27 of the Second half, Costello’s 25-yarder from the right side trickled over the line after hitting goaltender Bragg. Temple put up a mild protest that the ball had not crossed the line, but the score stood. At 30:51, however, Joe DiSalvo took a pass from George Lesyw and tied the game with his 11th goal from in front of the net. From that point until Bahr’s gamewinner, most of the ex citement was provided by Reice's near-goals, including a bullet that floored Bragg with 10 minutes left in regulation and a shot that caught the goalie backing into the net after coming out early in the overtime. NOTES: The goals by Costello and Reice were the third of the year for each Dantzig was forced to make saves on 16 of Temple's 20 shots, with his most impressive being a sliding stop of DiSalvo’s shot near the end of the first half State had 26 shots, nine resulting in saves by Bragg Temple coach John Boles was displeased most of the night, especially with the fans who crowded behind the nets. j ATTENTION Hf WANTED FEMALE Riders to Florida Depart on or near Nov. 16 Dolores 422 8181 (No toll) PEACE CORPS, VISTA 413 Boucke, Mondays 1 30 3 00, Thursdays 11 00 3.00, Watch for Winter hours.
