-Duke' is detective in new flick
By KIM STRACK
for the Collegian
So the Duke has another movie out.
It’s called “Brannigan” and you might
ask: what kind of a name is that for a
Western? It’s not. '•
“Brannigan” is John Wayne’s newest

endeavor and in it he is-called upon to be
a tough, slick detective. But the
stereotype which surrounds thd man still
is evident, and it tends to slow down the
beginning of the film.
The plot follows the usual direction.

Throughout, Wayne slowly rises tq the

There’s still something endearing about

sometimes gory movie was made less so
by the amusing antics of the many minor
characters. Daniel Pilon as the hired
killer in his black Jaguar XKE was
frighteningly convincing. The car itself
became an animal to be feared.
Overall, something eludes “Bran
nigan” and director Douglas Hickox.
Perhaps it is the screenplay, the
dialogue is rather poor or the actors'
inability, at times, to pull off a joke.iThe
movie just doesn’t have what it takes.
If you can manage to sit through the
dragging first half of the film, the rest
might prove mildly entertaining.
"Brannigan" is just that—an "en
tertainment” movie.
