Garret: Army biggest win

Penn State fencing coach Mac Garret did not hesitate when
he heard the question.
‘This team is far superior than anything I’ve had here,”
Garret said. ‘‘The Army win (last Saturday in West Point)
was one of the biggest wins ever at Penn State.”
Garret can qualify the 1975 edition of Penn State fencing in
that fashion because one, his squad has the best record of any
other winter male, varsity team, 5-1, and two before last
Saturday, Penn State had never beaten Army in fencing.
the Lion fencers are nowiapproxiamately half-way through
their season and are currently facing the toughest teams on
their 1975 slate.
S'enn State’s only defeat so far was to Notre Dame. The Irish
ped the Lions 14-13 yet Army handled Notre Dame easily
17-10 at West Point. So, last week, Penn State defeated the
Cajdets by the identical 17-10 score.
‘‘That’s not surprising," Garret said. “In the Army win, il
bouts went to 5-4. We won seven out of 11. It could have gone
the other way.
I‘Each meet since Notre Dame has been more difficult.-We
almost reached the peak against Army.”

native took no prisoners last Saturday winning his three bouts
by scores of 5-0, 5-4, and 5-1.
Penn State has five dual matches left before the Nortlf
Atlantic Championships in early March.

Institute of Technology.
“In this weekend’s home match-with New Jersey Institute of
Technology, we will be facing 6ne of the strongest sabre
squads we’ve seen this year,” Garret said. “They will
probably be as tough as Army.” (Army won sabre last
Saturday 4-5).
“If we can overcome Temple and Navy, we might have
clear sailing the rest of the way, ” Garret added.
By the way, after 16 tries Penn State has yet to beat Navy in
fencing.
