Aqua party time—women,men
By CHET WADE
Collegian Sports Writer
Something old and something new will be in order tomorrow
when the Penn State women's swim team travels to Pitts
burgh for the Pitt Relays. ,
The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Pitt's Trees Pool. Also
competing in this year's meet will be the host school, Pitt,
West Virginia, and Marshall.
The something old will be the rematch of Penip State's Lynn
Ross and PM'S Angie Lopez in the breaststrike. Ross and
Lopez met last year in the NCAA national championships with
Ross finishing sixth in the 50:yard breaststroke and coming in
one sec'bnd behind Lopez in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Ross, n sophomore All-American from Malvern, Pa., is not
a particularly big girl and depends on a stronfieg kick. She
didn't have the ,benefit of a high school swimming program.
However, in 1973 YMCA national chainpionships, she
finished first and second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke
respectiyely.
Two other swimmers expected to contribute heavily to the
Penn State cause are Laurie Fedon and Joan Peto, captains of
the squad.
Fedon, along with Peto, were members of the 400-yard
freestyle relay team that - recorded the eleventh fastest time at
the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
Nationals last year.
Fedon also has the school records in the 50 and 100-yard
butterfly.
Peto holds the Penn State records in the 100 and 200-yard
freestyle.
Also being counted on are the members of the diving squad.
The top two finishers from each school will count in.the point
totals and Penn State is led by three strong entries. The top
diver is Diane Underwood and freshman Diane Celecki and
sophomore Cheryl King should be high in the standings.
The something new in the meet for Penn State will be the
opponents. This will be the first time that the Lady Lions have
competed against any of the 'other teams except for the
regional and national championships.
Last season the Pitt Panthers came in well below Penn State
in the national championships held here at University Park.
But in their first meet this year, the Panthers destroyed Kent
State and appear to be the Lady Lions chief competition. WVU
and Marshall are still a mystery as to their competitiveness.
Last season Penn State was 9-1 and placed third at the
Eastern regionals and 18th at the nationals.

compete in relays
By FRED BREWER
Collegian Sports Writer
You say you're not in the swim of things
yet, but you're working on it. That's a luxury
Penn State's swimming team doesn't have—
they have to dive right in. This Satuiday they
host the sixth annual Penn State Swimming
and Diving Relay Championships.
This year's program is dedicated to coach
Bill Campbell, who directed his University of
Maryland teams to five straight cham
pionships in this meet. Some coaches are also
dedicated to ending Campbell's winning
streak. Penn State swimming coach Lou
Mac Neill thinks the three teams with the best
chance of doing it are Pittsburgh, Bucknell
and Kent State. The Universities of Virginia
and Virginia Commonwealth, entering the
meet for the first, are sort of unknown
quantities.
Don't expect the Nittany Lions to be one of
the top contenders. They finished 11th last
year with a total of 86 points and Mac Neill's
main goal is to reach the top 10.
Penn State can't even compete on the same
level with most smaller schools, because it's
one of the few major universities in the
country that doesn't give scholarships for
swimming. While the school is very generous
toward the swimming team in every other
respect, it hardly makes up ttr the lack of
recruiting.
Glancing at the results of last seasons dual
meets one would have expected that the three

Why you should
study
urban planning at
New York University
NYU's Graduate School of Public Administration
offers a unique opportunity
tot view at firsthand the most challenging
roblems facing urban communities.
New York University, located in the
heart of the nation's most complex
urban area, offers a two-year
graduate program of professional
preparation in urban planning. Pre
paration that will help you join the
dedicated men and women in city,
state and federal agencies who
are formulating and administering
today's most innovative public
service policies.
Our faculty in Urban Planning
includes practicing professional
planners and academic applied social
scientists. And many of our 'students
are already active in the field. Their
daily experience lends a rare vigor
and insight to our classes. Allowing
you an active, day-to-day involvement
with the nation's most crucial urban
problems and challenges.
Though the Program is operated
by a distinct faculty group and faculty
student curriculum committee, it
utilizes all resources of the other
graduate and professional schools
within the'University, allowing stu
dents with special interests to develop
'concentrations" of study in a variety
of areas.
Like housing and urban renewal.
Neighborhood preservation. Land
use and transportation. Urban econo
mic development. Urban design and
teams Mac Neill mentioned would be tough
by the way they manhandled the Lions.
Pittsburgh clobbered them 99-16, Kent State
hit them 85-28 and Bucknell sank them 95-18.
While comparative score matchups aren't
very reliable guides in most sports Mac Neill
said they prove even less in swimming. Once
many schools, get their 57th point, which
insures a meet victory, they either pull out
their top swimmers or put them in as
exhibition entries.
The reason the aforementioned three
schools ran up such high scores on the Lions
is because they played here and Mac Neill
disallowed their exhibition entries thereby
allowing the times to count in the records. Of
course the other coaches decide such matters
when the meets are held at their
na ta toriums.
There are some bright spots in the Lions
pool: Will Metzger and Steve Morrical in the
sprint events, Mike Noel and Ray D'Ardenne
in the middle distance events and Lane
Schuckers and Bruce Balderston in the
distance events.
Both Mac Neill and diving coach Bob
Goldberg expect Rich Maurone and James
Rightly to do well in the diving competition.
Goldberg rates Pitt as his top challenger.
Low board diving trials begin the meet at
8:30 a.m. The swimming trials follow at 9:00.
The high board diving trials will be held at
10:30. Swimming and diving finals will begin
at 3:30 p.m.
combo which constantly
thwarted Lion opponents' of
fensive attack this season.
They are also All-East.
Hartenstine had a triple
treat actually. He also made
the Kodak All-America squad
and was voted on the UPI All-
America team. That's not bad
environmental planning. _
Students working independently
and in groups undertake major
research projects on speoific neigh
borhoods in New York City and'
surrounding areas. There are many
workshops including urban design
and site planning. In short, the Pro
gram is given in a real-world context
with New York as the focus.
The Program leads to a Master of
Urban Planning degree recognized
by the American Institute of Planners
and designed to prepare graduates
for a rewarding role in determining
the future of American urban life.
