CHAMPAIGN, 111. (UPI)
Police Chief Harvey Snirley
,aid yesterday he believed
that University of Illinois
toot ball star Gregory Wil
hams was not simply "an
innocent bystander" in a
ee ken d shooting that
claimed his life!
Shirley said Williams, 20,
was wearing a holster, and
"I assume he had a gun,
although there was not one
found ••
"The question is why would
he have a holster if he did not
have a gun:: 'the police chief
told a news conference.
Williams. :a 215-pound
Junior defensive end from
Miami, died in Burnham
City .Hospital shortly after
being shot in the head with a

party at Kappa Alpha Psi
fraternity house Saturday
morning.
A fraternity pledge, Carl
Belser, 119, was wounded in
the thigh and treated and

Investigators speculated
that Williams and Belser
wereinvolved in a fight with
other persons "and that the

Anderson later returned to
the game and finished with
two NFL passing records. He
hit his first eight passes of the
game to give him 16 straight in
two games and ended with 20

cinnati won 18-10.
Edwards wasn't the only
Steeler upset. Joe Greene was
critical of the officiating in the
game.
Greene said "officials just
control the game too much"
and labeled the officiating
"the worst I've ever seen. If I
never see them again it will be
too soon." said the 275-pound
all pro defensive tackle.
The Steelers were charged
with seven penalties for 42
yards to five against the
Bengals for 43.
Anderson said "I was just
trying to get out, and ap

enough."
The fourth quarter incident
triggered an outburst of boos.
with Edwards the target.
Wayn(" Clark took over as
quarterback and the Bengals
scored four plays later.
Police said they had talked
to more than 50 persons,
including Belser, but had no
suspects.
Shirley said six deNctives,
about half the number on the
Champaign police force, were
investigating the shootings,
"and we'll do everything we
can to break this case."

Groves is spending the last two weeks
trying to whip his squad into the best possible
physical condition before the NCAA meet.
Penn State has one small advantage in that it
has lready run on the Indiana course t for
thec / Central Collegiates and should be more
farttiliar than much of the field with the hilly
terrain.
The Nittany Lions will have to have
everything fall into place Nov. 25 if they hope
to duplicate last year's tenth place firnsh.in
the NCAA Championships.
