"It was actually closer than the

"It was a great race, a tremendous
race today. It was a thoroughly en
joyable one to watch. The times were
outstanding. I can't complain to Mar

that ( 24:21). He !and Paul (Stemmer)
did a great job. was pleased with our
whole team," Banner said.
Saturday's race was the fifth con

sixth time, in seven outings that the
Lion ace has grabbed top honors.
Groves was pleased with Stemmer's
performance and also with the show

Penn State is now 7-0-3 on the year
and a tournament bid is almost
assured. The Lions do have a game
remaining with Pittsburgh on Nov. 15
which might present a problem since
the Lions must play their first tour
nament game before Nov. 20.
"I'd like to play the Pitt game but
I'd like to play the tournament game
before school is out, possibly Friday
night of this week," Bahr said. "We
could play the Pitt game a day or so
later but that of course is up to them."
Despite the win which raised the
Lions' record to 5-3, Groves saw Boom
for improvement. "We had a lot of
one-on-one duals over the last two and
a half miles, but nobody did anything.
We didn't lose all of them," the per
fectionist said. "We were coming up
but we couldn't go the rest of the
way."
Was the win conclusive enough to
guarantee an NCAA berth from \he
District 2 selection committee?
_'For that committee not to pick us,
they're gonna have to cheat," Groves
said. "The only team in the district to
beat us was Georgetown. We didn't
have one damn patsy meet."
Next Sunday PSU has a final tune
up before the national finals when the
Lions host a rugged field .in the
Eastern United States Track and
Field Federation Championships.
