Has the expansion team finally come of age in theNHL? Or
will the hockey fan become victimized by the most fraudulent
con-job in sports history?
Before May 1974, the National Hockey League was in serious
trouble. Hockey attendance, in general, was suffering. The
California Golden Seals franchise, owned by Charley Finley,
was in danger of bankruptcy due to fan non-support.
Other expansion teams, notably St. Louis and Vancouver
were showing signs of slumping attendance also. Most
profitable expansion clubs were receiving only sporadic sup
port, with the exceptions of Philadelphia and Buffalo, and
making ends meelwas growing difficult.
Even established teams of the old NHL were feeling public
wrath over the poor product offered for sale. Boston Garden
reported the first empty seats for Bruin games, all against ex
pansion clubs, in six years. Montreal fans, though more loyal
to the box office in selling out the Forum, expressed their
disapproval in well-publicized no-shows for games.
With bvious public rejection of the NBL's line of mer
chandit appeared that rough Unfits lay ahead unless
somet, in could be done to hype this admittedly tired product

and bring back the consumer.-
Then came Bobby Clarke and his Philadelphia Flyers.
Followihg the Flyers' surprising Cup triumph, club owners
jubilantly assured a skeptical public that the expansion team,
after a long and 'painful growth process, was now able to rely
on its own depth and talent in an equalized battle with older,
more established teams, for the coveted Stanley Cup.

A closer look at the Flyers' Cinderella story and hockey in
general, since expansion, reveals a 'situation different from
owner's claims and has far more adverse than beneficial con
sequences for the NHL and professional hockey as a whole.
In the NHL's early years, there were only six teams. For a
Canadian youngster to play in the NHL - was a dream, a feat ac
complished by only the best in the sport.
Every player in the game was a superstar in his own right
and teams boasted of many exceptional atheletes, , not just a
few. For Boston there was the Kraut Line of Dumartz-Schmidt,
and Bauer. Detroit proudly publicized their Production Line of
Howe, Del vecchio and Lindsay.
With expansion in the 1960'5, the scene began to change.
More players were recruited to fill the growing ranks of the
NHL. Youngsters previously holding only a dream of entering
the NHL suddenely found themselves standing at center ice for
the National Anthem.
Expansion led to further expansion andprofessional hockey
grew overweight under the strain of numerous additions to its
contingent. As expansion continued, the quality of players in
the game decreased at an alarming rate. Instead of 15 super
stars on a team, each club was limited to two or three.
Philadelphia poses a sad example of this trend toward
mediocrity. Admittedly, Fred Shero attributed the Flyer suc
cess to hustle and guts, owing only partial,-though deserved,
credit to the two Flyer superstars Clarke and Parent.
Owners of all NHL teams, who claim hockey is bacl* to its
former state of competitive excellence, due , to the supposed
emergence of the expansion teams, should be forced into a
form of corrective advertising.
