Women's cross country team pushing for changes

Many sports clubs, like ice hockey and sailing, have been
seeking varsity status to qualify for university financial
support. The women's cross country team, in the past a dub,
was successful list year.
For a team that has just gotten underway, its excellent
facilities, solid program and success in meets have been the
responsibility of the team's greatest)sset, its coach.
Christine Brooks has instituted many changes and is
pushing for others that have already impressed many re
gional Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) coaches.
The most important of these changes is that this year, the
women tram year round. Starting the week after fall term
began, they ran 6-8 miles a day and are in a program of weight
training. A couple flights up and down the steps at Beaver
Stadium is also included in practice.
The team, since it's only in its first season, suffers mostly
from inexperience, but has a core of excellent competitors.
Nov. 9 the team will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to participate in
the Cornell Invitational Cross Country Meet. Four schools will
be represented: Syracuse, Albany, Penn State and Cornell.
However, only 30 women are expected to compete since few
women participate in cross country at the college level.
Brooks has'decided to travel with the five best on the team:

"The girls just didn't know how to run a race, but we have
been getting experience from experience," said Brooks. "As a
result, we have been starting off and going out a lot faster."
In a later meet at Frederick, Md. the Penn State women
outran all but one of the Mt. Lebanon 'iiinners.
Although the/are not yet in the same class as the AAIJ,
Brooks has led Penn State way ahead of other schools. While
the women here have participated in six meets so far, others
have scraped together only one or two.
The program looks much brighter for years ahead. Of the
top five runners, two are freshmen, two are sophomores and
one is a junior. Brooks also has 12 scholarships to hand out in a
four year period.
She is recruiting through personal contacts and has so far
received '5O applications for the three or 'four scholarhips
available for next fall term. o
