Caucus
Black studehts having trouble making
the transition to University life might try
looking to Black Caucus.
According to Treasurer Samuel Lewis:
the main goal of Black Caucus is to
alleviate the problem of cultural shock.
"The transition from yotir home to
Happy Valley is a traumatic one," Lewis
said. 'You have few friends, no old
hangouts and nothing to fall back on."
He said Black Caucus wants to make
black students feel that they belong.
But It ck Caucus, formed Summer

said, pointing out that the University has
not initiated any black programs.
"In a time of crisis a black student
;should be able to turn to the University
.for help," Howard said, "but he can't, so
he turns to Black Caucus."
According to Lewis, most students
have the misconception
. that Black
Caucus is a radical group. "Black
CaucuF wants to solve problems, not
createthem." he said.
Lewis said that Black Caucus does not
want to segregate, but rather promote
black culture and give the University
community an opportunity to become
aware of black cultures. -
'Hopefully the importance of this
awareness will be in uniting all
peoples," Lewis said.
