— Editorial opinion Limping court The'Undergraduate Student Government Supreme Court is limping along with two members missing. Those two vacant positions must not be filled in the traditional manner. If tradition is followed now, when three important cases concerning USG President George Cernusca face the court, Cer nusca could be accused of stacking the court in his favor. Usually the USG president recommends to the Executive Council those students he feels are best qualified to fill the vacant positions. The council in terviews them and sends the names of those it finds best qualified to the USG judiciary committee, which interviews them and makes ; its recommendations to the USG Senate. Then the Senate votes to confirm or reject the appointments. Sometimes in the past the council, judiciary com mittee and Senate have'acted as three blots on a rub ber stamp for the USG president's selections. Cernusca must not be able to use a rubber stamp now, when he is asking the couft•for an interpretation of the constitution concerning the Senate's vote on the first impeachment article; wherPe grievance has beenMled petitioning the court to declare Articles I, 11 and ty, unconstitutional; and when another grieviance has been filed requesting permanent injunction against further impeachment proceedings. The court must be full-bodied not limping, han dicappped by missing members when it rules on these matters. Marijuana myth TO THE EDITOR: I would like to make a few comments about a statement made recently by Sen James O. Eastland. 0-Miss„ in regard to his ideas on marijuana smokers. I rather doubt that America will find a large percentage of its population '!semi :ombtes.- or - acutely afflicted by the amotivational syn drome," as Sen. Eastland put it. if marijuana were to be decriminalized. In fact, according to the Shafer Commission created by former President Nixon, "experimenters are characteristically quite conventional and practically in distinguishable from the non-user in terms of life style. ac tivities. social integration and vocational or academic per,: lormance. - It is statements like that made by Sen. Eastland which destroy the credibility of drug education programs The USG constitution provides an alternate procedure to the one traditionally followed to appoint judges , which would expedite the lengthy process, eliminate Cemusca's involvement and prevent him from being accused of conflict of interest. The USG constitution states that the Senate or the Academic Assembly "may vest the appointment of any judge in any other officer of the USG, provided that two-thirds of those members of either house present and voting concur to do so." This was done last spring when the Executive Council could not agree on former USG President Mark Jinks' selections. The Academic Assembly gave the USG judiciary committee chairperson the power to select the judges. The committee reduced the number of applicants to five but had only three positions to fill. In a compromise approved by the Senate, three of those five were chosen with the un derstanding that the other two would be next in line for positions mien openings occurred. The Senate or the Academic Assembly must vote to 'circumvent the traditional process and appoint again the judiciary committee's chairperson to select the judges. In this way, those nominees already selected fairly and agreed upon can be nominated by the com mittee and approved by the Senate before the court begins deliberations on the three' questions con cerning Cernusca's impeachment without Cernusca being involved in the process. Name and phone number I I (optional) I which seek to inform youth of the very real dangers of hard drug use. Sen Eastland also stated that the Oregon' , law which made marijuana a civil, rather than criminal, offense was "too permissive." However. it does not seem to me that getting rid of a law which is unreasonably harsh, is ineffective as a deterrent, is selectively enforced, • and creates a general disrespect for all laws is too permissive. Education regarding the true effects of drug usage will be of no service lc individuals such as Sen. Eastland continue to publicize the myths surrounding marijuana use. Send in the clowns Sam Kaufman 4th-biology TO THE EDITOR: It was the Collegian articles that spurred my sudden interest in the Undergraduate Student Government. decided to go to a meeting and see for myself if they were as bad as people said they were. I would like to take the op portunity to defend them properly. Monday night the circus came to town (North Halls), acid did their performance. Why is it that the Collegian forgot son* of the facts? Here are some that you missed: (1) Yelling and screaming displayed frequently by many persons. (2) Total disorder of the meeting (even forgot to• vote on the special meeting issue). (3) One of the senators-and some of her friends showed total disregard for University policy by bringing and drinking wiskey in Warnock. (4) Warnock was c left in condition fitting for the pork , part of the agriculture departmenk)Papers and soda cans•were all over the place, furniture was greatly displaced and cigarette butts were everywhere but in the ashtrays. Well. I went to the show and was greatly entertained. Thank you. USG. for showing me that student government is not only Parking problems? You may be disgusted because you've just had to pay a fine for parking your car on the grass. Or you may be disgusted sirhply be cause your legal parking space is out in the campus boondocks. Just being disgusted will do you no good. For- the situation to change, the University must have suggestions on how to solve the problem. A suggestion box on student parking problems .. has been placed on the HUB main desk. It's begging for contributions. Do you have a feasible suggestion for changes in student parking or driving rules? If so, feed the suggestion box. Feel free to use this form. John Schmitthenner 9th—finance Crusade dangerous? I must bring to your attention in formation concerning a campus organization whose policies pose a threat of severe psychological damage to those involved with it. This organization is Campus Crusade for Christ. It has become a formidable religious cult that threatens to enslave many students, especially freshmen, by making them promises of high grades and many friends. The policy that I am most concerned about is the one, as stated by a staff member, which says that it doesn't Collegian forurri Matter if one flunks out, juSt so long as he is completely involved. Fear, repression and psychological torture are used on those, who for some reason decrease their involvemend in Crusade. The individual's conscience, his studies or other circumstances may compel him to do this it doesn't matter. I was deeply involved in Campus Crusade for two and a half years. I made Ihe dean's list during two terms in which my, participation was at a minimum. Circumstances forced me to decrease my involvement in Crusade last year, and I was subjected to abuse and per secution that I still find hard to believe. First, my "friend" and roommate was itor of the Colleg fun, but also funny. The cowns were very impressive especially those people who say, "I resign, I quit, I can't reason with any of you" and then run out of the meeting. All in all, it was a very I nice show. So step right up. Hurry, hurry, come see the greatest show on earth. You can sit with me. We'll laugh and have almost as much fun as the performers themselves. Thank you again for such a fine performance P.S. No thanks for the mess you left in Warnock! After all, , even the regular circuses have clean up crews. To the Senate TO THE EDITOR: Regarding the degeneration of the USG Senate: I told you so Move the puck TO THE EDITOR: How can one of the largest universities in the United States be unwilling to support an ice hockey team? Hockey is a sport which has swept down from Canada and has caught fire all over the country within the past five years. With the Philadelphia Flyers winning the Stanley Cup last year, ice hockey is on the verge of becoming a major sport in this area. The Penn State Hockey Club has had a rough history due to the fact that the University.refuses to present it with any kind of financial support. Over three hundred students skated last year and paid for ice time and equipment on their own. The This side: of the truth A time traveler • By JACK JACKSON of the Collegian Staff Mr. Peabody, Sherman and I stepped into the Wayback Machine, which this time was set for 1984 and ,University Park, Pennsylvania. We landed a minute later, and I looked around skeptically because I really didn't believe I was in the future. I walked up to a couple of co-eds and nonchalantly asked - them what year it was. "Time traveler," the one knowingly said to the Bother. "It's 1984 right now. What year are you from? Don't you see anytirg different?" I I oked above me this time and I noticed the campus was connected by rails,l probably for a monorail system. Sure enough, a cigar-shaped car carrying students was pulling into the HUB. "That's not all we have," the l g!rl went on. "There is a matter energy converter in Old Main so the president can get on and dff campus, without being, seen." ,"Sd what else is new? By The way, how Okay, fellas, it's time once again for the Dow-Jones closing average.' By TERRENCE WITHERUP 1974 Penn State graduate Mark Singel Former USG Senator • and proponent of the Undergraduate Student Federation told to move out of the room. This was done one day while I was at class; I had no advance knowledge of it. I admit that my roommate and I did not get along perfectly, but I was willing to make sacrifices in order to improve the situation where necessary. The problems we had experienced were used as a rationalization by those who told him to leave. My roommate . was so impregnated with fear and haired that he obeyed thern`and began to accept their rationalization. He has become the most ruthless person I know. When 1 tried to find out where he had moved to. they would not tell me. and I may have never found out if it hadn't been for some of my roommate's temporary feelings of guilt. When I went to see a staff member to find out what was going on, he put me through a two-hour inquisition in which he tried to force me to confees my sins of non-involvement with Crusade. I had a clear conscience on the matter, however, and could not comply. As an act of reconciliation, I bought my former roommate a ticket to a concert. He agreed to go, but at about an hour before the Concert, he was ordered by the staff member not to attend the concert with me, as if I were a dangerous animal. When I asked the staff member later why he Orad done this, he just said, "Make believe (he) is dead." My former John Yodock llth-pre-med Opinions expressed by the editors and staff of The Daily Collegian are not necessarily those of the University administration, faculty or students. v . is the football gleam these days "Which one?" she asked. "You mean there are more than one? I can't believe that. There must be millions of students here. Where do they put you all'?" "Well, I'm in South-South-West halls and," she said pointing to her firend, "she lives off campus in Toronto.", I wanted to stay loner and hear about the amazing changes on campus, but Sherman ushered me along with Mr. Peabody to deal with our business here in the future. This business was to attend a linguistics course for which, the professor had developed a ?new language. The lecture Was being held on the third floor of the Forum. "To begin with," tne professor was saying when we ..walked in, "this language is based d,n the ideas and teachings of a forme president of the United States, Richard M. Nixon. He had a unique way of talk ng which I have organized into a sys i•matic language. roommate then began to mock and sneer at me when he saw me. Others have been hurt by their vin dictive policies also. One boy committed suicide last year in the Crusade House, a fraternity that tias been transformed into a "Jesus commune." I believe that he was driven to ihis death; after having observed their actics first-hand myself. I thank God that I survived this sadism. In previous 14tters to the editor, some have labeled (.;iusacle as neo-Nazi. It is true that some of them are, but it is also true that many of its members are very sincere in what they do. The problem is that they do not realize the trap they are getting into. It is hard for me to denounce the policies of Crusade, after having been a defender of many of them for over two years. I still hold the same religious beliefs:as they .do: I believe the , Bible. and follow it conscientiously. However, I am outraged at the policies by which they now propound those beliefs. I wish to apologize to those people that I have encouraged to join Campus Crusade for Christ. The name itself is deceitful, since many of its leaders would have been Christ's crucifiers. I have brought these charges to the attention of its leadership and they remain undisputed. Apparently, they have every intention of continuing their present policies. varsity played several intercollegiate games and traveled to Canada on their own time and paid with their own money. The ice pavilion staff is much like the University in that they are hostile towards the entire hockey program. This year we are told there is going to be no varsity or junior varsity teams. I feel .it is about time the athletic department devoted some serious consideration to the Penn State Hockey Club and give three hundred students the opportunity to skate and play Organized hockey. Let's get the puck moving! Pitiful representation TO THE EDITOR: After attending the past Monday night's USG meeting. I was appalled at conduct of the Senate In surance Committee Chairperson Pam Michaels when she said "she was resigning and the whole Senate was full of shit." As a student who by accident stumbled upon this mess, I still can't figure it out I pity all the undergraduates she represents ,Collegian DIANE M. NOTTLE Editor at PSU 'The language is based on the idea of expletive privilege. Men in those days felt it necessary to express things strongly without being responsible for them. In Nixonese, as I call my language. everything is expressed in passive voice. "The main part of the sentence is called the .president. The president is a clause. Ronald Zeigler is a subordinate clause. The subject and verb don't agree unless they want to. "Next we change the actual words in the language;' we inflate all the ten dollar words and we defoliate all the flowery verbs. Finally we use the language in ppetry. "The goldeti-un melted all the snow into slush. funds," he recited. "I can't believe you're saying all these things," I said, standing up. "You've in troduced all sorts of rules semantics.
