Centre 'County groups meet tomorrow The by-pass, which has been in planning for over ten years, is designed to re-route traffic from Route 322. The two end sections were constructed in 1969, !:iut the middle section has been a subject of con tenticin between citizens, PennDOT and College Town ship officials. At issue is the interchange design as the by-pass crosses Route 26 on the Benner Pike. The present desigh is a "trum pet" interchange [ with a long connector road rather than a simple exit ramp. The bridge bringing the by pass over the pike; as present ly designed, would cross at a spot where the pike is.already 40 feet off the ground. The engineering firm has studied the feaiability of going under the Benrier Pike. . Also at issue is the con nector road to the University from the proposed middle sec tion as it bends around the University toward North Atherton. The University wants a road built from the by-pass to Park Avenue, which is in a residen tial area just North of Cam pus. A local citizens group, the Centre Citizens_ Council, wants the road to c t onnect with Cur tain RoO, which runs through Campus! The University claims the Curtain intersection would create high traffic volume which would conflict with portation Study, which is heavy pedestrian traffic on looking into future traffic campus The Centre Citizens, on the other hand, oppose the Park Avenue cohnector because it runs into a residential area, while the Curtain road access would lead into planned University parking areas near Beaver Stadium. The original PennDOT design favors • a connector road into Park Avenue, but no final decision has Veen an nounced. The by-pass has been a sub ject of controversy for the last r Richard Garner, president ten years. In 1973 the Centre of Centre Citizens, said Friday Citizens Council took a formal he "anticipates the secretary stand against some aspects of will announce a decision Cen the by-pass design. tre Citizens Council will sup- Besides a ' revaluation of port," and added he would at the access route, the Centre tend the meeting Citizens also have asked the Centre Regional Trans .. ••••••••••••••••• Vot , unt S9 eer. Whether some compromise will be worked out among local groups is "up to them and Kassab," said one Penn- DOT official Friday. Bruce E. Speegle, district engineer for PennDOT, said he is optimistic about the meeting and hopes to see con struction on the middle section begin next spring. "I don't think we'll get everything we want, but I don't think they'll ,get everything they want either," he said.
