Grapplers deck Sooners 23-21 By JEFF YOUNG Collegian Sports Writer Wrestling coach Bill Koll was at his excited best last evening, and one would have had to be blind, deaf and dumb not to understand why. His Lion grapplers put together a couple of key rides and key pins to pull out a 23-21 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Rec Hall. "Yes, I'm very pleased," he smiled following the Lions' fifth straight win. "Actually, we could've done better. There were a couple that didn't wrestle up to their ability, but then there were also a cou ! that did real fine. I'm. very proud." The Sooners, now 4-3, were fourth in the nation before the match, and are winding up an eastern tour which could've been very tiring. However, they didn't look tired through the first six bouts. "Check his transcript!" a fan shouted in remembrance of last year's Sugar Bowl as Shawn Garel rode Lion freshman Kevin Woodrow, wrestling his very first varsity match. It was to no avail. After bridging most of the bout, Woodrow was _ - G7he ALLAMERItAN RATHSKELLER , AND • EP SIECIAL'ES • BEEP attb . "If he had been wrestling before tonight," Koll said, "he might have beaten of guy. It was very unfair of us to puthim in there like.that." Penn State came back on the next two bouts. John Fritz wrestled strongly for an 11-5 win over Keith Green, then Bob Medina came from a 4-2 third period deficit, nearly winning but settling for a 4-4 •draw, with Norm Hatchet. "Medina looked like the typical Eastern wrestler tonight," Koll said. "He was just sitting back,=\vaiting and waiting, and then he realized 'hey, maybe I can beat this guy.' I think he should've won." Denny Sciabica and Sooner Friday, January 11,1974 Brian Beatson battled hard, but Beatson battled the hardest in the final period to win 9-7. Mike Mousetis never really gave Frank Peck a chance in an 11-4 decision, which came as somewhat of a surprise to Koll. "Actually, Mousetis might be the unsung hero tonight," Koll mused. "He's wrestled some brilliant and some poor, but tonight he was brilliant." After Rod Kilgore's 16.6 superior decision over Chris Koll, Lions Jerry Villecco and Jerry White decided they didn't like the 15-8 lead that Oklahoma had built up. Villecco went to work and at 3:17 he sent the crowd of 6,000 into a roar by slamming the shoulders of Jeff Callard to the mat. "Yeah, they're gonna stretch that mat out tomorrow so no one steps in the holes," Koll jubilantly said of the key fall. White then made it five out of five (pins, that is) for his freshman season over a stunned-looking Randy Stalcup, and Penn State had jumped out to a 20-15 edge. Dan Brenneman moved to a 4-i lead after five minutes, got warned for stalling in the final period, but hung on to win 6-3 and cinch the evening for Penn State. "There's some kind of psychology about Oklahoma, or any of these big teams," Koll said later. "The East has too much respect for them. They say 'oh, these are really good wrestlers. We can't touch 'em,' but once they break through, they can do it." Peon State 23, Oklahoma 21 118 Shawn Garel, 0, pinned Kevin Woodrow 5:42. "He was trying to get that arm and move it, but the fans couldn't see it because it Was underneath." Now Abel was almost on the floor. "But we were trying to do it that way, you see." He stood straight again and the smile went right back to his face. No more than 15." Penn State has 11 dual meets scheduled this year. Abel talked and laughed like he takes his losses and his victories in about the same spirit. Some of his kids let him down he said, and some weren't physically ready to wrestle, but Penn State won and Oklahoma lost, this time. "Green, the kid that wrestled Fritz, weighed 141 Wednesday night when I called him at 11:30 p.m. in Oklahoma. He worked out there until his plane left at 2:30 a.m. and he was so exhausted and dehydrated he passed out in Pittsburgh. He finally got down - to 128, but the dehydration and such were causing those muscle cramps he was having during the match." The Fritz-Green fray was interrupted twice because of Green's problem. Fritz handled the unfortunate freshman. who was allowed an extra two pounds to Penn State's surprise, 11-5. "Peck was the first one that let me down," Abel said, sliding his hands in and out of his back pockets. "He doesn't have that extra plus, but he usually moves real well and consistently." Abel next did some speculating on the upper weights. "I think if we had gone for the draw at 190 we could have had it. Then if we get the pin at heavy, we would have had it." Lion Dan Brenneman decisioned Tim Kearns 6-3 at 190, before Sooner heavy Bill Kalkbrenner pinned Doug Hazel. Oklahoma lost by two points. Abel took a reminder about Lion Charlie Getty's possible appearance at heavyweight in such a situation with a sparkle in his eye. "Yeah now, but Getty wasn't in too good shape. Bill Kalkbrenner is one of those guys that keeps after you." Someone threw in the, believe it or not fact that Kalkbrenner had lowa State big', man Chris Taylor on his back for over twenty seconds, • artists • writers • typists before Abel answered a Clarion State question. "We were so down at Clarion it's hard to evaluate who's better. But if we had wrestled at Clarion State the way we wrestled tonight, I'm sure we would have won." Quite a tribute to Lion coach Bill Koll's men. "How many people were here?" Abel said, turning the tables. Finally it was decided 6,000 was the official number. "That's a good Big Eight crowd," he said. "But you know," Abel started, all his gestures coming from his face, "Callard should have beat Villecco. He made that stupid move and that was it, Villecco pinned him." Abel made a final consideration, then a comparison before checking in with his team. This one involved Villecco and Clarion State NCAA champ Bill Simpson, who pinned Sooner Randy Staleup in their meeting this year. "I think Villecco is tougher than Simpson, he does more things well." A janitor, slamming the bleachers into the wall, punctuated Abel's last word. Mexico 123 South Allen Street
