The students of course, spend four years here and go on but many of the rest of us are only passing through too a sojourn in State College being merely a rung on the ladder of professional progress. This transience argues against commun ity involvement one is concerned with one's own progress time enough to set tle down somewhere and work for a good community. The thought that here should give us'pause is that this future community will alsd have suffered neglect from good non-engaged people passing through. Coupled with the indifference that results from transience is the negative cast that characterizes much of the current investment here. The investors obviously care little for State College beyond its prospects as a growing market. Indeed growth itself is idolized and worshipped like the golden calf and there are few strong voices raised in behalf of balance and quality. There is, I believe, a cure for the malaise that sickens community not only here but all over the country and that is vigorous engagement now wherever we are in our careers, and our lives. WI Is are all transients finally but our crea tionktives after us. A city has a kind of immortality as compared to the lives of its inhabitants. It is a concrete and con tinuing expression of our values. It is part of the created future into which we project our children it is the evidence of what ever culture we may claim it is worth fighting for. Short sighted investment can be fought zoning and building codes can be changed. A good city can be hpd if the will to have it exists. Despite transience then let us work together for a quality of permanence and a permanence of quality in this community now.
