Dreibelbis: After going to Harrisburg last week for a look into Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Herb Denenberg’s crystal ball, the Collegian decided to come back home this week for a local seer, State Representative Galen Dreibelbis who oversees the State College area. Working.in a college town, it comes as no surprise Dreibelbis knows his. college football. It also comes as no surprise that he picked the Lions. “I’ve seen the Lions at home and away,” Dreibelbis said, “and again they show the signs of being a well-coached team. By ray McAllister Collegian Sports Editor Oklahoma is at Texas, LSU is at Auburn, Air Force is at Colorado, Nebraska is at Missouri, Maryland is at North Carolina State, UCLA is at Stanford and Pitt is at West Virginia. Army is at Penn State. In the week of big games, Penn State is inflicted with something less so. After difficult encounters at Stanford and Air Force, Penn State comes home to host a team which California beat 51-6. California, incidentally, was beaten 66-0 by Alabama early in the season. And, if last year can be a yardstick, the Lions beat Army 45-0. A pushover, right? Not necessarily. As always, Penn State coach Joe Paterno is apprehensive. There are, he says, good reasons tq be so. “You’ve got to forget the Cal game,” he said yesterday afternoon. “After they had had such tremendous success against Tennessee, they weren’t ready for Cal. They weren’t very sound which is very unlike the Army football team. “They got behind and began to second guess. They just lost their poise and became unglued. Like I said, it’s very, unusual for an Army team.” WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HELP? Nonetheless, seventh-ranked Penn State rates between a four-and five-touchdown favorite for the 1:30 p.m. encounter in Beaver Stadium. But, Paterno says, his crew hardly is overconfident. “There might have been a tendency for them to feel that way but once they looked at the Tennessee and Georgia Tech films they knew better. They know Army is capable of beating anyone on their day.” There are a number of factors which may make it difficult for the Cadets to have “their day.” First, says Paterno, “we’ve practiced well all this week—not just one or two practices. In fact, probably we’ve practiced as well this week as we have at any time this year.” , Additionally, the Cadets will be up against a defense which ranks first against the rush in the nation. And Gary Hayman rates second among punt returners wih a 19.4 average return. Army’s best chance of denting the Lions’ vaunted defense rests largely on the arm of Kingsley Fink, who hit on 23 of 35 passes against Tennessee for a school record of 326 yards. Fink currently ranks as the nation’s ninth leading passer with 45 completions in 85 attempts for 600 yards and three scores. Fink, who sat out last year’s Penn State contest with an injury, is not quite the QB the Lions saw two years ago. “He’s always had a . good arm,” Paterno said, “but he’s much steadier now, he’s much more in command. He’s got a feel for what he’s doing.” And if he hasn’t, Penn State’s defense well could. give him a feeling for what it’s doing.
