Health phone service available
By DAVID SHAFFER
• Collegian Staff Writer
Centre County residents now will be
able to get free health information by
dialing a phone number.
The telephone health information
service, Tel-Med, is the fourth of its kind
in the country. The system is designed so
anyone ban phone and request that a
tape on any of 129 health subjects be
played over the phone.
The tapes, which are approximately
five minutes long, are physician
approved. Information is available in
such areas as common ailments,
diseases, pregnancy, birth control,
dangerous drugs, cancer warnings,

organizations.
According to Tei-Med Director Tom
Hammonds, the service supplies
“preventive information, not
diagnosis.’’ Hammonds added the
important feature of >the system is
convenience.
The first Tel-Med’ service was
organized in San Bemadino, Calif, in
Mdrch 1972. Similar services later were
begun ,in two other California
metropolitan areas. Centre County is the
first non-metropolitan area in the
country to institute a Tel-Med program.
The project was organized by the
Centre Area Health .Council, with

sponsorship by the Centre County
Medical Society. Volunteers from the
Bellefonte Hospital Auxiliary operate
the tape service from the Willowbank
Unit of the Centre Community Hospital.
The service is located in Bellefonte
because most parts of the county can
call there without toll charges.
• Hammonds said he estimates that
after the system gets under way calls
could average about 4,000 each month.
Tel-Med operates from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. weekdays. The
number is 355-1531. There is no toll
charge from State College.
Volunteers still are needed for the
service. ■

four-channel receiver.
Remarkable power,
outstanding performance.
The new Sylvania RQ3748 is one of the most
powerful four-channel receivers on the market
today. It delivers a full 50 watts of continuous
(RMS) power from each channel. You can even
drive four additional speakers in another room at
the same time for two complete quadraphonic
systems. And there’s special bridge circuitry to
give you 125 watts per channel in the stereo
mode. Remarkable power combined Iwith a :
highly sensitive tuner, a comprehensive control
panel and an array of input/output jacks to give
you super four-channel SUPER VALUE
sound for a lot less than Efta AtllV
you might think. rUHONLY
