Penn State
Continued from page 9
Penn State—Tom Shuman (12) is not an
_stablished quarterback. But in this game
he is important to watch since, as
successor to John liufnagel, he may be the
key to Penn State's chances this fall. Just
how_ well can he run a team? John
Cappelletti (22) is the strong tailback, who
was practically all of Penn State's ground

attack a year ago. Randy Crowder (53) is
one of the East's finest defensive tackles.
Paterno seems to come up with top men
for that spot regularly. Ed O'Neil (87) is
one of the most experienced of the Lions'
linebackers. They always seem to have
good athletes there, also.

then five years as an assistant coach at
Stanford before becoming the Cardinals'
top man last year. '
Penn State Joe Paterno (Brown '5O)

as head coach at Penn State. Was named
coach of the year for 1968 and has led five

games, losing only one.
Notes •
Since this is - opening game of the year for
both teams it amounts to a shakedown for
each. Joe Patenio feels his strong offense
will find its true value early "because this
front four on the! Stanford defense is big
and excellent." .!lOn the other hand, Jack

Christiansen has expressed the feeling
that here, and now Mike Boryla will find
out if he has good receivers. Most of
Boryla's fine pass catchers of 1972 have
graduated ... Boryla is the son of Vince
Boryla, former player and coach of the
New York Knickerbockers of. the National
Basketball Association ... When Joe
Paterno turned down a $1.3 million offer
last Ja'nuary to coach the =New England
Patriots of the NFL, the Penn State
student body was excited. Here was a
man, who acted out just what he said. So
the seniors invited Paterno to be their
commencement speaker last; June and in
that address, rare for a college head
coach, Paterno said such things as: "You
will be victims of the system 4f you fail to
execute your responsibilitieS to yourself
and to your fellow human beings; success
without honor is an unseasoned dish, it will
satisfy your hunger but it wont taste
good." ... Saying he was probably the only
speaker at a commencement last spring
who would not discuss Watergate, Paterno
did say, "I'd like to know, how could the
President know so little about Watergate
in 1973 and so much about college football
in 1969?"
