rough waters ahead for Welsh
College, former Penn_State offensiVe
backfield coach George Welsh won't have to
listen to any more talk of easy schedules.
Welsh left Penn State to return to his alma
mater where he will inherit 20 lettermen
from Navy's 4-7 club of a year ago. Better
than half will return to offensive duties.
But while eight starters will resume
offensive chores,' the defensive unit returns
with only two. Graduation casualties
include defensive tackles Mike
O'Shaughnessy and Glen'Nardi.
Navy's offense this year comes under the
heading of Great Expectations. The
principal gears are back from a machine
that broke Navy records for total yards
(3,894), total plays (823), rdshing plays
(537), and total first downs (218) last year.
Cleveland Cooper, the first Midshipman
ever to break the 1000-yard barrier, returns
after his great sophomore season to dot
Welsh's "I" formation.
"I'm very impressed with Cleveland
Cooper," • Welsh admits. "There aren't
many backs I've been around, and I've been
around some good ones, that are able to do
some of the things Cooper can,"
As Welsh sees it, the key to Navy football
fortunes in 1973 is confidence.
Said Welsh: ' ; There's no way to be
successful or win without confidence. It's
especially important in the type of
competition we're part of here. To have real
confidence, I think you need some victories.
"If we're going to be a good football team
this fall, and I believe we will be, it will be
important to our mental attitude to win
some of those tough games (Penn State,
Michigan) early in the year."

Lion frosh 'outstanding`;
seven deep at quarterback
"I wouldn't want to mention any
individuals; they're all outstanding," was
freshman football coach Fran Ganter's
enthusiastic description of his 1973 roster.
The frosh, whose coaching staff includes six
former Penn State players, will play a four
ghme schedule: Milford Academy,
Delaware, Navy, and Villanova.
The offensive lineup, which includes five
members of Pennkylvania's Big 33 All-
Stars, is particularly;deep in the backfield.
The frosh are three deep at tailback and
fullback, and seven deep at •quarterback.
Gainer explains the seven quarterbacks
by saying: "We were looking for athlete's,
atidniot just quarterbacks. Everyone must
learn two positions, and
,any of these
quarterbacks could play somdwhere else in
the lineup."
Among the offensive linemen are three
Big :13 stars in guard Tom Oldziejewski,
tackle George Reinher, and tight end Joe
McCabe, Reinher is the brother of varsity
kicker John Reihner.
The defense includes a pair of huge
tackles in Brad Benson (6-4. 260( and Dave
6-6.2501. Benson is a Big 3:1 All-Star
Among the linebackers are Mike
Cappelleti. brother of varsity tailback.
.John, and Big :33 stars Keith Zimmerman
and Bon Crosby Crosby and another
linebacker. Chuck Benjamin, have been
v irking out with the varsity,
ooper
Of the neophytes' opponents, Delaware
always produces good football teams, and
Milford usually has some talented prep
schoolers. "Navy had a good year
recruiting, and Villanova is beginning to
strengthen its frosh program &so," said
Canter, who expects four good !games for
those who soon will be playing ll'a season.
