East College Avenue (Benner Pike) State College 238-4971 "It was just a cross pat tern," he said. "The linebackers were pretty tough back there. They were bumpin' me around. I ac tually took too long getting open." As was the case in Penn State's two previous games its offense was overshadowed by outstanding defensive efforts. Tackle Randy Crowder led the Lion defenders with 12 tackles, seven of them unassisted. However, for the third time in as many games the Lions failed to score in the first half. Penn State got the first shot at a score when linebacker John Skorupan recovered Skogman's fumble at the lowa 37. Al Vitiello attempted a 48-yard field goal but the boot was wide to the left. The Lion defense forced lowa to punt and took over on their own 27-yard line. That drive was halted when Hayman fumbled a perfect LUMBER .7 0 kron , COMPIX/filier BRAND vTui Rapti HE YEAR pitchout and Hawkeye linebacker Dave Simms recovered at the 50. Both squads traded punts to end a scoreless Furst quarter. Kokolus' field goal at 10:34 of the second quarter put the Hawkeyes up, 3-0, but the Lions couldn't move the ball and Brian Masella punted again. Crowder gave Penn State possession again at 8:13 when he burst through the lowa line and got the handoff from Skogman. Hufnagel, threw an 18-yard pass to Hayman, but only moved Penn State to the lowa 43 before punting again. Kokolus attempted another boot from 46 yards out, but it fell short seconds before the half ended. In the second half the Lion turnovers arrived on the scene early as Cappelletti ran by a pitchout and lowa's Dan Dicke' recovered at his own 33-yard line. The Lions picked up the loose ball after lowa's Bob Sims fumbled at his own 24- yard line, but again the Penn State running game was floundering. Vitiello at tempted a field goal from the 47-yard line at 7:45 but it, too, was wide to the right. On strong defensive efforts from Crowder and Skorupan the Lions pushed lowa back to their own 15-yard line and took over at the 37 on a 22- yard punt by Frank Sun derman. But Hufnagel was dropped for a 10-yard loss by lowa's Doug Nelson. Vitiello tried again, this time from 46 yards out. He hardly got it off the ground and missed his third attempt at 3:34. Penn State took over at its own 37-yard line with 13:26 left and the timpo picked up. Hayman took a pitch for 14 yards and Cappelletti followed with an 11-yard gain. Then Natale hauled in a 21- yard pass to the lowa 11. Cappelletti, after picking up four yards, fought through from the seven-yard line for the Lions first touchdown with 11:14 left in the game. Penn State took the lead for the first time, 7-3. Both teams punted again and lowa started out from its own 37-yard line with 6:39 reMaining. Skogman alter nated to fullback Frank Holmes and tailback Dave Harris then tossed a 15-yard pass to Rollins at the Lion 37. Rollins was open in the end zone and caught the go-ahead First score score with 3:01 left from 36 yards out. Lion defensive back Steve Stilley and safety Gregg Ducatte shared the blame.
