Phillips, full time instructor in the Depart ment of Hotel and Institution Administ ratio n, has been named supervisor of food op erations in Commonwealth supported colleges where food is contracted from private firms. In this capacity Phillips will inspect and report on the operations of various state supported collages for the In stitutional Food Research and Service division of the Depart ment of Hotel and Intitution Ad ministration. Phillips received the bache lor of science degree in hotel administration at Penn ,State. His experience in the food ser vice field :ncludes managerial positions at several colleges. Mrs. Barbara M. Shannon was appointed part-time in structor of foods and nutrition and will teach two courses, "Family Meals" and "Applied Nutrition." She received the bachelor of science degree in home economies at the Univer sity of Tennessee at Martin and the master of science de gree in foods and nutrition at the University of Illinois. D. deMaine has been appointed associate professor of computer science. He will teach a graduate course in in formation processing systems and cor.duct research in in formation retrieval, DeMaine obtained his bach elor of sciew_e degree at Wit waterarand University, South Africa, in 1948, and his doctor of philosophy degree in chem istry at the University of Brit ish Colt:mbia, Canada, in 1955. Magazine Board Appointee Joseph Jordan, professor of chemistry, is one of five new members of the aU.isory board of Analytical Chemistry, month ly publication of the American Chemical Society. .A member of the Penn State faculty for 14 years, he is internationally recognized for his extensive research in elec trode processes, polarography, the electrochemistry of home (an iron-containing blood pig ment), thermochemical titra tions, solution calorimetry and gas chromatography. Speech Professor Honored Eugene E. Whitt, professor of speech, received the dames A. Winans Memorial Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address at the. recent Speech Association of 'America convention in Los Angeles. Established in memory of one of the founders of the modern speech professicn, the award includes a cash grant. White is the second scholar to receive the award. He was recognized for his essay, "Mas_ ter Holdsworth and 'A Knowl edge Very Useful and Neces sary,' " which appeared in "The Quarterly Journal of Speech," February, 1967. In this essay White discussed the nature and the implications of the rhetorical theor„ of Rich ard Holdsworth, 1 7 th-century Master of Emmanuel College of Cambridge University. Professor Killed Stork? A professor of family rela_ tionships at the University won attention in a national maga zine's tongue 'n -cheek article, "Who Killed the Stork?"
