Outruns By CHARLIE HULL Collegian Sports Writer The Penn State cross country team ran into a' strong team and some bad luck as it was defeated by the defend ing IC4A and NCAA. championships, Villanova, 17-41, in Philadelphia last Saturday. The Wildcats seemed to be in midseason form as their strength overwhelmed the young Nittany Lion squad. Penn State ran into trouble ; on the unfamiliar course at Villanova as Ray Smith ran an extra 100 yards and lost a place. State's luck stayed sour as Steve Gentry was un able to finish the five miles. Despite Smith's wrong turn, he finished a very 'credifable' fourth overall and in first position or the Lions, 47 seconds behind first place finishers, Charlie Messenger and Tom Donnelly of Villanova. Al Shaeffer, Phil Peterson and Barry Rounds were the next finishers for the Lions in seventh, eighth and tenth place respectively. - The Wildcats, picking up where they left off last season, simply overwhelmed State with an amazing season show .of strength and balance. Villanova was so well bal anced that two men tied for first and their first five placers finished within a minute of each other. Unless the team is slowed by injuries, the Wildcats seem almost assured of another IC4A win in November. Despite the crushing defeat dealt the squad by Villa nova, the never say die spirit of. the Lions was exempli fied by Smith. In talking withthe Villanova runners after the race, Smith discovered that both first place finishers, Messenger and Donnelly, are averaging between 120 are 140 mils of running per week. When the cross country bus returned to flee Hall, just six hours after the grueling five-mile race, Smith got into his practice sweats with running partner Joe Witkowski and they headed out on a long ten mile run; Smith explained simply, "I'm not in good enough shape."
