University. Plans
Research Center
For Educators Use
A new Center for CooPerative ReSearch with Schools
has ;been established at the University to enable public
school educators and faculty to attack research problems
together. '
Made possible by action of the Pennsylvania legisla
ture during its 1966 session, the Center, which is. nick-,
!ponied CReWS, is directed by C. Allan Riedesel, associate
professor of education.
"We are concerned with opening new channels to
handle current problems of educational concern," he ex=
Plained. `lResearch conducted by our College of Education
has often been basic in nature. We need more research
that can be 'used directly in the clasSroom."
CReWS and the schools work together to alleviate
these problems and develop research proposals for sup
port of education projects in Pennsylvania communities.
They will evaluate curriculum innovations and seek new
techniques; to use in studyn t ig school issues.
First? Project
Their first project is already well underway. This is
an in-service training progrhm with two groups of mathe
matics teachers from the Williamsport schools. Not! only
Will it increase teacher conjpetence in' basic mathematical
concepts, but it will also compare the merits of computer
assisted instruction with more conventional classroom
Methods. 1
I ' 'On tap are plans for a second computer -assisted in
struction study, this one on spelling.' The developmeht of
film's for teacher education in the fields of science and
mathematics is under consideration, along with a project
to assess children's growth ;through their art work.
"Although it is not CReWS' function to furnish
grants," Riedesel points out.i"we will try to direct a school
system to financial sources.?
•
1 Research projects may be instigated either by a pub
lic school group, a University faculty member, or by
CReWS itself. A teacher, for example, eager to try out
an idea for improving leaiming in her classroom could
talk it over with her principal, and together they would
present their idea to the Center. The school always retains
veto power over a project.'
Excellent Response
Response to the Center has been excellent, Riedesel
reports. When operations got underway early this year,
questionnaires were mailed to all the chief school advisors
.in the Commonwealth, eliciting over 200 responses. A con
ference with school personnel is planned for summer to
clarify objectives and discuss possibilities for action.
Faculty members from nit departments of the College
of Education are availabli to consult personnel from
schools through the offices! of the Center. Miss Marilyn
Suydam and four graduate assistants are currently assist
ing Riedesel in the work.' The graduate assistants iare:
Kenneth Getschow 11, Lemont; Mrs. Marion Baxter, Jose
Gonzalez, and Mri. Joyce Kane, all ot,State College.
