PAGE EIGHT Homecoming and Games of the Pass For Penn Slate students and alumni alike, homecoming has always been happiness. And, of course, happiness is seeing the Nittany Lion football team scramble and scrape, run over and around their home coming adversary on the Beaver Stadium turf. A homecoming victory is ecstasy in foot ball cleats and happiness on a touchdown drive. The last time the Lions played homecoming host to the Golden Bears of California (whom they battle Saturday) was in 1961 when State handed them a 33-16 defeat. In between that period, the Lions racked up two more victories while losing one to bring their homecoming record for the last five years to 4-1. In the last half decade, the October festi val football tilt has left fans hoarse from cheering and tired from the release of pepped up emotion. The games have been so dandy that the rest of the weekend festivities seem anti-climatic. In 1961, Lion football noteables Galen Hall and Koger Kochman displayed a brilliant one two backfield punch that led Penn State to its 33-16 rout over California before 30,265 stadium fans. Quarterback Hall threw two long touch down passes, scored one himself by faking his opponents with a “now you see it, now you don’t” kind of thing. Kochman, Penn State’s All-American halfback candidate that year, gained over 100 yards behind a great offen sive line display that rocked California back on its heels time and time again. Down by a score of 10-3 in the second quarter, the Lions thrashed back on the coat tails of a 36-yard touchdown pass to Kochman and a 56-yard bomb to end Junior Powell. In the 1962 homecoming tilt, the Lions put on the old squeeze play as they pinched past the Orange of Syracuse 20-19 on a late and nail biting touchdown drive. In what started out as a 14-0 rout before 46,920 jam packed fans, Rip Engle’s forces fell behind to an Orange team that slugged its way into a 19-14 lead, The last Nittany Lion drive to victory started with a 13-yard pass from quarterback Pete Liske to All-American end Dave Robinson to put the ball on the 50 yard line. On the next play Liske hit Robinson with another pass to SPORTS CAR SPECIALTIES 1536 North Atherto " s,reet State College CO'r.T - - _ USED FURNITURE. The Owls of Rice were the 1963 Beaver Stadium homecoming visitors in a 28-7 loss to the Lions. Quarterback Pete Liske threw 19 passes and completed eight while leading Penn State to its third straight victory of that campaign. Liske covered some 106 yards in the air, but the big play of the game was a second period TD that came on a fourth down play. Gary Klingensmith swept around end for the score after he barely escaped going out of bounds on the six-yard line. The Orange of Syracuse got revenge for their 1962 homecoming loss to the Lions at Beaver Stadium by dashing past Penn State in a closing second drive to capture a 20-14 victory. It was a typical Syracuse-Penn State clash that included hard hitting, fancy run ning, and deft passing. In fact, the Lions played so well that they went into half-time with' a 14-0 lead. The climax to this tilt came after Syra cuse’s Roger Smith intercepted a Gary Wyd man pass and returned it 38 yards to the Lion 22. Six plays later Orange quarterback Wally Mahle scored on a rollout from the three to ice the victory and change expressions of hope to frowns of sadness for homecoming fans. Last year the Lions badgered their per ennial whipping boy West Virginia by a 44-6 score. Quarterback Jack White hit on 8 ot 15 passes, including two touchdowns to lead the Lion onslaught. F’enn State’s record breaking split-end Jack Curry seemed to avoid the West Virginia secondary as if they had the bubonic plague. He latched on to bombs in covering 111 yards and a touchdown. Fulback Dave McNaughton led the rush ing parade with 97 yards on 21 carries and seemed to break through the Mountaineer like it was paper towel without “wet strength.” It was the sweet victory that the Lions needed to surge on and finish up strong in evening the season log at 5 and 5. Saturday the Lions clash with California in another homecoming encounter. Just like the rest, it is the big game on the big Saturday afternoon that spells homecoming. A rose may be a rose,-may be a rose. But, homecoming is happiness and football. Austin added: “We also will have to put on a good and steady rush on Don Meridith, their passer, and make him throw the ball before he wants to.
