1 Research Funds
Two grants totalling $91,900 in support of 17 fellow
ships have been received by the University from the Na
tional Science Foundation. The grants are administered by
E, B. Van.Ormer, assistant dean of the Graduate School.
Among other grants announced by the University today
were two from the U.S. Atomic Enei'gy Commission, one in
the amount of $30,000 for a study of the basic aspects of the
action-of radiation on microorganisms by Ernest Pollard,
professor and head of the department of. biophysics; and
the other for $8,404 for a study of gases in solids by Della
M. Roy, senior research associate in geochemistry in the
Materials Research Laboratory.
' Force Office of Scientific Research has ap
proved $8,263 for a study of mathematical foundations of
turbulence theory conducted by John L. Lumley, professor
of aeronautical engineering.
t a $28,551 grant from the Public Health Service,
1. C. Hisatsune, professor, of chemistry, will study struc
;u re sfo S 2J2? oxlc ! es of nitrogen, while an $8,933 grant from
the U.o. Office of Education will support Jack N. Sparks,
associate professor of educational psychology, in a study of
effects of inapplicability of the continuity condition upon
the, probability distribution of selected statistics and their
implications for research in education.

General State Authority has authorized $5,000 for a study
by Frederick R. Axelson, associate professor of engineering
