HOUTS & SON State College THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, UNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA Lion lagers Beat Peru; Weiss, Donato Pace Win By JIM BUKATA Sports Editor It was nothing more than a good workout for Penn State's basketball team last night as the Lions handed the Peru Olympic team its third succes sive loss, 87-61, at Rec Hall. All 12 ballplayers who saw action scored as coach John Egli prepared his squad for to morrow's big clash against the Pitt Panthers in Pittsburgh. "All in all this was not one of our better performances," Egli said after the game, "but we've not played a game for a week and a half either." The Lions were never in trouble as they hit the first four shots they took from the field to take a quick 9-2 lead. The Peruvians cut the margin to 9-8 and a little later to 15-13 but that was as close as they could get. "They just don't have the experience in the backcourt to be very effective," Egli said. "Those two Duarte brothers that played the post are tough though. I'd take either one of them." Ricardo Duarte, the leading scorer for the Peru squad had a poor night as he hit only 4 of 17 shots from the field. He did wind up as his team's top scorer with 16 points. Jim McGregor, the coach of the Peruvians would not put himself on the spot when he was asked to compare State and Pitt but Ricardo Duarte said the Pant hers were stronger. • STUDENT CHECK CASHING AGENCY . . • All Student Check Cashing Agency members must have schedules at HUB desk by Monday, January 13 at noon. and "1 think whichever team higher for the game will win," McGregor said. "Your team has two exceptional guards espe cially that boy Weiss." Egli kept his first five in the game for the first 15 minutes of the contest before substituting an entire unit. When the change was made the Lions held a 39-26 lead. With the reserves in Peru cut one point off the margin to make it 45-33 at halftime. The Lions opened the lead to 20 points early in the second half and Egli kindly cleared the bench' to keep the score down. "This gave our reserves a chance to see some action," the Lion coach continued. "They haven't played too much this year because the games have been too tight and I've had to go with my regulars." The Lions managed to shoot 46 percent from the field com pared with the Peruvians 32 percent. "Our boys can score from the inside," McGregor said. "Once we get some men who can shoot from the outside our game will improve. Until then it's just going to take time and a lot of hard work and prac tice. The South Americans, who appeared at Rec Hall last night on the third leg of their 12- game tour of the United States already appear to be showing the effects of their whirlwind travels. And next week they play Ohio State, Wichita and Kansas State on successive nights. Jim McGregor, the veteran! Peruvian coach said he has no solution for the effects of traveling but that he would probably start a two-platoon system for their next game', against Kentucky Wesleyan. Peru lost its opener Monday night against Oglethorpe in At lanta, then fell before Pitt Tuesday in Pittsburgh. When the trip is done, they will have gone about 8,000 miles in 20 days—with probably nothing to show for it but some souve niers and a dozen losses "We're learning things, though," McGregor said, "and this is about the only way (traveling) we can learn. McGregor retused to be put on the limb about tomorrow night's Pitt-State game, but Peru's top player, Ricardo Duarte, gave the nod to the Panthers. "Pitt is much stronger than Penn State and they hurt you more underneath," Duarte said through an interpreter. The 6-8 Duarte, one of 'three brothers playing for the Peru team, had what for him is an ff night as he scored 16 points. He hit on just 4 of 17 field goal tries. Nineteen-year old Rau 1, youngest of the Duarte broth ers and tallest Peruvian at 6-9, reportedly is interested' in at tending an American univer sity. Raul; who scored 12 points last night, wants to major in agriculture. "We'll even give him a comfy spot to take his afternoon sies- tas," Lion assistant- coach Joe Tocci quipped. A major stumb ling block, however, appears to be Raul's inability to speak English. i k ' '6A, . 1 i\ . Vk k ,A . l'ev.i . Ve-Vv t i, A 1,.. A \ I 5, V
