Future Rosy For Soccermen
After Winning Year
It was a season of ups and downs, a season which could hardly be called spec
tacular, but all in all, one which showed promise of better things to come for Penn
State’s soccer team.
After four straight losing seasons, the Nittany Lion hooters finally broke the;
.500 mark in 1963 when they compiled a 5-4 log. It was an uphill battle though,
for the Lions faced a tough schedule, were hampered by numerous injuries and had
to cop three of their last four games to br'ng home a winner.
State registered triumphs over.
Colgate, Bucknell, Temple,!
Gettysburg and Pitt while losing!
to West Chester, Maryland, Navyl
and Army. But a look at the list
of those teams being-considered
for the regional playoffs shows
just how rough the Lions’ sched
ule was.
All four of the teams that de
feated State are on the list for!
their respective areas: Navy and
Maryland from the South, Army
from the New York region and
West Chester from the Pennsyl
vania-Delaware-New Jersey
area. Temple, an outfit the Lions
swamped, 6-0, is also on the list.

WINTER SEASON PRODUCTIONS - PAVILION THEATRE
By JOHN LOTT
When it came to the injury
department, Dame Fortune
seemed to frown on the Lions
all year. Harry Kline, Nizar Al-i
Talib and John Katona all were
hurt in the opening game with
West Chester and were ham
pered throughout the season.
Katona played the rest of the
year with his knee heavily taped
while Kline was bothered off
and on by an ankle injury.
Al-Talib, who suffered spas
modic recurrences of a charley
horse he sustained as a fresh
man last year, was in good shape
for the last two contests and he
responded with a sparkling per
formance in both games.
In addition, such front-liners
as captain Dieter Heinze, full
back Bill Manke and speedy
wingman A 1 Schattschneider all
missed some action because of
various injuries.
The Temple game was easily
the Lions’ top effort of the sea
son. The Owls, who entered the
contest undefeated, were no
match for State that day. Coach

Ken Hosterman’s booters prac
tically ran the opposition off the
field while rolling up their big
gest score of the year.
There were other highlights
too. In the Maryland game, the
Lions thrilled a home crowd by
battling the mighty Terps down
to the wire before dropping a 4-3
decision. State also played par
ticularly well against Colgate
and in the second half of the
Bucknell game.
Final statistics show that Al-
Talib, the fleet sophomore from
Iran, led the team in scoring
with eight goals.
Graduation will take a large
chunk of the Lions’ regular line
up, but the future is bright for
next year. There is a talented
crop of freshmen to complement
those returning sophomores and
juniors who will fill the gaps left
by Stu Ross and Jay Robins at
goal, Manke and Mickey Mastil
at fullbacks, Heinze, Kline and
George Williams at halfbacks,
wingmen Ted Jones and Andy
Honker and inside A 1 Maiga.
