Now the stage is set for Act Two when State goes - to Syracuse Saturday to climax its battle for the Eastern Interco yet to be defeated in five meets. It. wasn't until the judges flashed scores for Army's Mike Gary (still rings), the final per former of the evening, that any one knew the victor of Saturday's meet. _ Coach Gene Wettstone's per formers pulled ahead by 28-20 at the- intermission- and it looked as if the contest might turn out to be a runaway. But it looked that way only temporarily. ARMY CAPTURED first, sec ond and third places in long horse vaulting to win the event, 13-3, and surge ahead by a 33-31 . score. In the next event (parallel bars), Nittany_captain Torn Sew ard (96.5) and- sophomore Mike Jacobson ,(95.0) both performed brief but almost: perfectly exe cuted routines to gain the top two places, 10 points and the lead, 41-39. Then came the final event, the still rings. Army's third man, Dave Kirkpatrick, scored an 87.0; teammate Ken Slutzky got an 88.5. For the Lions, F. P. Sforza . scored an 84.5 and sophomore Bill Jenkins, an 87.5. State rings - specialist Bud Wil liams did an excellent routine of strength and hold positions but the officials awarded him Only a 94.0. The Orange have sive, but apparently the pressure was too much and judges gave him a 93.0. HAD GRAY WON first place on the still rings, Army would have won, 49-47; if State's Jenkins didn't hold a .5 edge over Kirk patrick the meet would have been, a tie at 48-all. Looking best for the Lions were Williams, Seward, Al Porter, Jacobson and Jim Culhane, who had all-important foUrth and fifth places. Seward, besides his brilliant performance on the parallel bars, finished first in free exercise (94.0) and third on the horizontal bar (87.0). Jacobson, competing in free exercise and as an all-around for the first time, ended up third in free exercise (88.0), second on the parallel bars, and first on the horizontal bar (93.0) with an ex cellent performance. Porter, a junior and non-letter man last year, probably rates as the hero of the meet, Competing last on the side horse, he .came through with a 93.5 'first place finish in the best showing ever. .THE MOST disappointing event for-the Nittany gymnasts was long horse vaulting where veteran Ca dets finished one-two-three._ In an afternoon freshman meet, State defeated the Plebes; 58-38. "After you're bombed the way we were at Annapolis, you have to look on the bright side of things," Lucas said yesterday. It seemed that the only bright spot of the long afternoon was the running of Howie Deardorff. Run ning the mile, the outstanding senior set a Naval Academy Field House record running the distance in 4:10.
