THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, UNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA
Mastroianni, of "La Dolce Vita"
fame, is perfect in his first droll
comic performance, providing a
mirthquake of merriment.
ON AMERICAN shores, Harold
Hecht and the boys, who in 1958
filmed The Vikings are at it
again with "Taras Bulba," a kind
of "Vikings for Landlubbers."
This one's about Taras (Yul
Brynner), a dirty old Cossack,
and his number one son, Andre
(Tony Curtis).
These Cossacks were forever
riding around in the name ,of
(Polish), libertine, and pursuit (of
Poles). They fight a -- little, do a
mazurka, fight some more, and
mazurk on harder.
RUSSIA'S steppes never looked
more beautiful (maybe because it
was filmed in Argentina). But
when Brynner flings his arms on
his hips and drops his voice five
or six octaves, he appears just like
The King of Siam again, only
dirtier. And Curtis wanders all
over the 50-foot expanse of screen
with a lost expression like a kid
who can't remember where he left
his pants.
Back to the story. Christine
Kaufmann, 'Curtis' Love, is a
small, thin Pole and-- daughter of
a big, fat Pole, the King. This
complicates matters, and she's sent
to bed without any dinner, or, as
a matter of fact, without a bed.
Daddy kicked her ;out. Anyway,
it's all 2 hours and $7 million
worth of good old-fashioned, dirty
fun with the 10,000 Stooges.
