Now One of the Best
End of Rope Climbing Signaled
Beginning on Rings for Williams

Three years ago State gym
nast George (Bud) Williams
couldn't execute a fundamen
tally simple handstand on the
still rings. Today he's a spe
cialist in the event.
The compact, blond-haired Wil
liams managed a second place
finish in the Easterns last season,
finishing as runner-up only to
now former teammate - Greg
Weiss, Currently he's the Lions'
No. 1 competitor on the still rings
and a favorite of Nittany enthu
siasts.
Williams' story, one long in
the making but brief in principle,
began following the 1961 season
when rope climbing was dropped
from intercollegiate dual-meet
competition.
AS A SOPHOMORE, he per
formed in the rope climb for
State coach Gene Wettstone's
NCAA championship squa d.
When college officials voted to
dismiss the event from-their gym
program, Williams' career looked
like it had come to an abrupt end.
But Williams soon discovered
the move ,effected him only as
the proverbial "end of the be
ginning."
During the summer of 1961,
Wettstone gave Williams a set of
still rings to take to his home in
St. Marys. The aggressive State
gymnast set about the impossible
—or almost impossible—task of
mastering the event. And to make
things more difficult, Williams
installed the rings in his base
ment.
All summer' an eager and dili
gent Bud Williams pursued his
goal. He combined a weight-lift
ing program along with his self
supervised training on the rings.
HIS FIRST goal was to learn
the handstand. With the rings
hanging to the floor and his
small 5-6 frame stretched to its
maximum, Williams cleared the
cellar ceiling by not more * than
six inches.
Hampered by the lack of space,
he persuaded officials at the local
high school to let him workout
in the school's gymnasium during
the summer months.
Last year one of the most im
pressed by Williams' progress
way Wettstone.
"His sheer desire to make and
be part of the team helped him
to conquer the still rings," Wett
st one remarked recently. "He
spent many hours trying to win
a position. Not only did he win
the position but placed second in
the EIGL Tourney last year."
THIS YEAR Williams contin
ues to be a great asset to a Lion
squad which currently sports two
wins against no losses. According
to Slate's veteran coach Weft
stone, Williams has the "intelli
gence, desire and right 'type of
body" to be the next Easterns
champion in the still rings event.
In the latest State performance
—a 55-41 winning effort over
Temple—Williams captured indi
vidual honors on the still rings
wtih a 96.5 score.

SAE Scores Swim Win
On Final Meet Event
Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Chi Sigma fought tooth
and nail down to the final event in lIVI swimming last night at
Glennland Pool before their meet was decided. SAE won the
crucial 120-yard relay and the meet, 25-16, to move ino the
second round.
In other contests, Tau Phi Delta crushed Alpha Kappa
Lambda, 33-8, and Kappa Delta
Rho defeated Sigma Chi, 29-12.
SAE was led to victory in the
relay by the foursome of Pete
Olsen, Ron Thompson, John
Ringer and Jim Lovejoy.
808 BRIED took first in the
freestyle, while his SAE team
mate Gus Schroeder won the 60-
yard breaststroke. Tom Sramek
was the lone victor for Alpha Chi
Sigma, winning the backstroke.
Tau Phi Delta swept all five
first places in its meet against
Alpha Kappa Lambda.
Barry Borgeit ,took the free
style; Brooke Thomas placed first
in the backstroke, and George
Leavesley won the breaststroke.
Ron Mair took a first in the diving
and also. swam on the winning
relay team.
GEORGE SAYER of Sigma Chi
scored, a victory in the breast
stroke with a good time of 38.9,
but it was not enough to offset
four first places by KDR

Phil Good led the winners scor
ing victories in the freestyle with
a time of 33.7 and anchoring the
winning relay team.
Other winners for KDR were
-Jim Foote in the backstroke and
John Johnson in the diving,com
petition.
Good's win in the freestyle was
scored by inches over Norm Allan
of Sigma Chi. The loser was timed
in 34.2. ---
INTRAMURAL director Dutch

should be lowered in the-freestyle
because of a rule change which
allows the swimmer to touch the
wall. Previously, the swimmer's
hand had to touch.
