Fencers Nip Temple
In Seasons Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 30—The
Penn State fencing team opened
its 1963 season here this after
noon by stopping Temple, 15-12.
The meet went down to the
next-to-the-last bout as State
gained the "decisive fourteenth
point when ' sophomore epeeist
Fred Davis beat the Owls’ Jeff
Ham, 5-4.
Chuck Dooley, number three
sabreman, was the Lions’ top
fencer today, sweeping all three
of his bouts, 5-1, 5-0, 5-3.
Four other Nittany swordsmen
were double winners. Chick Poole
turned the trick in sabre, John
Cooper and Ken Vandenburgh
each took a pair in foil and Davis
won two epee bouts. •
A 1 Gallo, Temple’s outstanding
foilman, caused State the mos'f
trouble as he won all three of
his bouts, 5-3, 5-0, 5-3.
